sexual_chocolate Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 There's an idea! Just keep talkin'.... Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Whatever, you goobs. The new anti-SUV ads sound pretty funny, the way they're parodying those insipid anti-drug ads. W/r/t M-goat saying that they should say what they mean, fuck that, they're drawing attention to the issue they want attention drawn to, accomplishing the same end. Anyone read the bit about Craig Rosebraugh in this week's Willamette Week? He's talking about the viability of violence as a form of protest, and wondering if nonviolence is really the way to go. Apparently some "cell" of the ELF has also issued a statement that they'll be sending their message with the gun, if need be, to get their point across. Interesting idea, although the Doctor still feels that murder is not a good thing to do. Whaddayou gun-toters think about this? Given that you feel that it's right to defend what you hold dear with lethal weaponry, and given your support of the USA's use of killing to further our ends? Quote
allthumbs Posted January 9, 2003 Author Posted January 9, 2003 As a responsible gun owner, I do not advocate violence unless threatened directly. If protest is the order of the day, let it be passive. Quote
jkrueger Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Might doesn't make right, but it does get the point across. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 The idea, though, Traskasaurus (ooohhh, a cute pet name!), is that these people would in fact be defending against something that threatened what they value. A preemptive strike, if you will, not unlike killing Saddam before he kills us. Quote
sk Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 isn't the ELF the same group of folks that have been blowing up car dealerships???? Quote
allthumbs Posted January 9, 2003 Author Posted January 9, 2003 No DFA, people like that would be simple felons with an agenda. Totally different thing. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 They lit a few SUVs on fire, somewhere back East if the Doctor recalls correctly. Seems they torched a couple of McMansions as well. www.earthliberationfront.com probably has the specifix. Quote
allthumbs Posted January 9, 2003 Author Posted January 9, 2003 Well there's your answer right there. Most Americans I know despise that type of behavior. Wonder how they'll stack up as someone's prison bitch? Quote
Winter Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Gas stations that do not get any of much of their oil from the Middle East: Citgo Conoco Phillips 66 Sunoco Coastal/El Paso FyingJ Sinclair Oil Vitol ConocoPhillips (Union 76) Tesoro Petroleum Hess Wal-Mart Borderline gas stations: BP Amoco This is off the web ... don't know if its accurate, but I've heard it before as well. As for Rosegraugh, he's talking about a sort of wonky view on social movements and the role of violence and civil disobedience. Where would the civil rights movement have been without riots? What about the French Revolution? Civil disobedience can play a role in moving your agenda forward ... but you sort of lose the moral high ground unless a lot of people agree (like the the CR riots), and personally I'm a freakin' wussy ass pacifist that prefers not to engage in violence. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Trask, DFA agrees with you, and maintains that taking human life is fucked. But it's an interesting position for the traditionally nonviolent far left. Recalling that the US was founded with something of a bang and all, it'll be interesting to see if these nuts decide on all out war against corporate rule. Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 felons with an agenda. Kinda like Poindexter and his cronies (Reagan, Bush, etc.) in the early '90's? Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Rosebraugh article. He's speaking at Laughing Horse Books in PDX some time in the next few days, about this very topic. Apparently it was his Master's thesis; the role of violence in American politics or history, something along those lines. Quote
sk Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 I thought the ELF took responsability for blowing up two car dealerships here in eugene? I could be wrong though... maybe just a copey cat thing. Quote
allthumbs Posted January 9, 2003 Author Posted January 9, 2003 We've come far from the days of the Boston Tea Party, grasshopper. It's not a viable option. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Actually, Muffy, now that you refresh the Doctor's admittedly rusty memory, that does sound familiar. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Ah, but Trask, was the BTP and the ensuing revolution a viable option then, either? Who decides when it's appropriate to kill in defense of one's cause? ATTENTION GOVERNMENT SNOOPS, SPIES, SCREWS, TIA OFFICIALS, et. al.: Dr. Flash Amazing does not endorse violence against any person, least of all the great leaders of our nation and our nation's businesses. It's all just for the sake of conversation. So don't come around turning DFA's house upside down looking for ties to Al Qaeda, the ELF, or the ACLU, 'cause there's nothing there. Good day. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Dodge Durango Hybrid Concept Dodge PowerBox Hybrid Dodge Ram HEV (this one is really cool) All of these programs have been cancelled, I believe. Totally sucks, I think some of those were really cool. Quote
allthumbs Posted January 9, 2003 Author Posted January 9, 2003 hahaha, yo bad fda. It wasn't such a stretch to have a revolution back then. Hell, we were barely a country. Try that shit now brother and yo be a dead mofo in a heartbeat. Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 I thought the ELF took responsability for blowing up two car dealerships here in eugene? The perpetrators didn't "blow up" shit. They set the vehicles on fire. You may not find a difference, I do. I don't recall that ELF claimed responsibility although one of the alleged perpetrators, Tres Arrow, is a member of ELF as well as Cascadia Forest Alliance (which I might add is non-violent). They also torched a few dump trucks at Ross Island Concrete. Tres' still on the run. Violence against property in the form of protest has a long history in america. I don't advocate violence against people. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Tre Arrow's FBI file is apparently quite large these days. He's out in the woods somewhere, clearly (when he's not camping out on a building in downtown). Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 Gas stations that do not get any of much of their oil from the Middle East Whats that mean? Toyota has been advertising that they will be offering a hydrogen powered SUV for sale starting later this year. I believe it will only initially be available in Japan. Quote
iain Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 I thought the electric generator idea was pretty cool on that Dodge Hybrid (above link). Quote
