wetslide Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Hi there, I'm trying to figure out what route to do for an upcoming trip. I haven't been out in a bit so I was wondering what kind of conditions exist in the high alpine in the enchantments at the moment. I'm bringing two less experienced friends so I wasn't thinking anything with sustained vertical ice. But I don't want to do something that is a walk-up. We have about a 36 hour window. Looking for a semi-technical, alpine ice climb~ AI 2 (we'll all have 2 tools), and/or easier rock (under 5.9), that is reasonable to do in 36 hours. We are planning on the Enchantments. Ideas? Index? Colchuck? Prussik? Quote
dave schultz Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Index has been great the last two weekends. A little on the chilly side, and a little wet in the morning, but its pretty good for mid February. Quote
kurthicks Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Gerber-Sink on Dragontail got climbed in the last week. Heard it was scratchy. I bet you could wallow up the North Buttress Couloir of Colchuck. Quote
Kraken Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 My buddy Josh and I found excellent conditions on the Sherpa Glacier/Couloir route of Stuart last week. Go getchyaself some! Quote
wetslide Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Thanks all, Might be soloing something as my partners all bailed. Unless someone wants to hit up something tomorrow with me? Smash and grab. Quote
JensHolsten Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Climbed the Gerber-Sink on D-tail on 2-10-13. It was thin, but in...great climbing! Quote
montypiton Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 yer still a bit early for the best ice in the Stuart / Enchantment area. tons of seasonal ice lines April - June most years, but they require more freeze/thaw to form than we usually see this early. Dragontail, Stuart, Argonaut are all great, but usually dry or snowed under this early... Argonaut has at least two couloirs on the north aspect that go about WI2-3 when they're not buried in snow...
