jpark42 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 A partner and I are looking to do Yocum Ridge. Has anyone been up in that area recently? If so how does it look? Quote
Sunnyside_up Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Here's something from a month ago: http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3984 Probably not a route to do without some careful planning beyond the limits of the internet. Quote
ivan Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 i'd recommend going up their the first time w/ the intention of skiping the first gendarme - there's a direct way up to it from the reid - otherwise you do all the work to get to the 1st gendarme only to discover it just won't go and then it takes to long to cheat your way onto the ridge... Quote
rbw1966 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 you can circumvent the first gendarme by going around it on the south side of the ridge. Quote
prussik1 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 ...and don't forget to do a test profile once you are on the reid, as an avalanche can really ruin your day! christopher Quote
unklehuck Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Bump. Looking at hitting Yocum Sun/Mon...any thoughts? Quote
YocumRidge Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Bump. Looking at hitting Yocum Sun/Mon...any thoughts? 45 mph winds: http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hood/forecasts/3426 Quote
Water Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I wouldn't place too much trust in the wind speed on that site. It says 55mph winds this morning and 60mph this afternoon, from the SSW. The average at 7k from telemetry today is about 10mph winds. That site gives estimates for 10k so I guess its possible. It says a high of 14 degrees at 10k for today. So if it is 37 right now at 7k on hood..there is a 23 degree change in the next 3k? Sorry it just seems grossly inaccurate, and that is for today's forecast--let alone trusting wind speed 5 days out..why bother. Telemetry data seems in line with what NOAA estimates. YocumRidge Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 FYI: Mountain-forecast gives the data for the four different elevations (including the summit): 11241 ft, 8203 ft, 4922 ft and 1641 ft http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hood/forecasts/3426 http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hood/forecasts/2500 http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hood/forecasts/1500 http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Hood/forecasts/500 Whereas there is no data for 7K, the predictions for 8203 ft and the current NWAC telemetry (temps and winds) at 7K look pretty consistent to me. But yeah, 5 days ahead is ways to go. Quote
