mtn.climber Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) I'm thinking about climbing Colchuck Peak from Lake Colchuck during the weekend of Feb 21-22. Accoding to Beckey, the route is called the East route, but I've also heard it called the Colchuck glacier route. Has anyone done this during late winter season? Any information would really help. Thanks. Edited January 28, 2010 by mtn.climber Quote
rob Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) what route? What kind of information do you want? There are lots of TRs on most of the common routes up there. If you are a little more specific, I'm sure there is lots of beta people can give you. Edited January 28, 2010 by rob Quote
RokIzGud Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Im thinking about doing the same climb at about the same time. Ill let you know how it goes if i go before the 21st. ...Are you Chuck...? Quote
mtn.climber Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 not Chuck. Let me know when you're going. Maybe we'll hook up the same weekend. Quote
goatboy Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 The colchuck glacier route is easy (if snow conditions are accommodating) but I bet getting there is the biggest challenge right now. Long way up to the lake once the road closes... Overall, a simple but relatively long winter outing from road to summit... Quote
OlympicMtnBoy Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 It only ads like 3 miles of snowy road walking, not that bad if you are doing it in 2 days. Sounds like a perfectly reasonable climb for that(approach on day 1, climb and pack out on day 2). I've been up that road in winter to Colchuck a few times. Quote
RokIzGud Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 not Chuck. Let me know when you're going. Maybe we'll hook up the same weekend. My bad my brother (Chuck) lives in Wenatchee also... Were still not quite sure what days were going. It might end up being during the week depending on my brothers work schedule but that would be cool to see you up there!Ill let you know. Quote
stevetimetravlr Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Colchuck Glacier route is a breeze when its all covered by snow, like now and early season. No spikey deals on your feet needed. but when the snow melts back to expose the ice underneath late spring, it can get a little treacherous. the main ice sheet is about half way up on the left. Quote
montypiton Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 I've done this route in January, and found the greater challenge to be getting to the lake -- however that was in the early 'eightys when the Stuart Lake trail was not a boot-packed trough. If you're a skier, the Colchuck Glacier makes a great ski descent... hiking the road adds four miles, and added about two hours to our approach to the lake. Another option is to get a tow from a snowmobile... Quote
Bug Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Yellow can too. Depends on the wind loading this weekend. Orange pretty much rules out muti-facet and wide ranging elevation trips at Snoqualmie pass for me. I'm pretty sure you are trolling but I put that out for general consumption. I am pretty conservative when it comes to avalanche danger. Quote
kevino Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) Snow stability was pretty good from my opinion. There was some new snow (heavy powder) this morning. Enjoy! Sorry, this was about snoqulmaie. I'm going up to colchuck monday, I'll report back then. Edited January 30, 2010 by kevino Quote
kevino Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Same story for Colchuck. Ended up skiing Aasgard since no one had skied it yet. Great snow. Sorry for the bad pictures, it appeared my camera is slowly dying. Quote
