neversummer Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 I'm not familar with Darrington, if it's sport climbing I might be interested. Quote

chucK Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 Many of the climbs at Darrington have what I think is a sport-climbing flavor in that  1) protection is almost all bolts  2) the climbing is very well protected*  * I must qualify this to say anywhere there is a move of difficulty about 5.8 or more. There are some pretty good runouts on easier terrain.  It is unlike sport-climbing in that you have almost no use use for your arms. It is almost uniformly "trust your feet" territory. Quote
mattp Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 True enough, ChucK, most of the routes in Darrington are relatively well-protected and bolts are prevelant. But the climbs are unlike sport climbs in that (1) you can't comfortably walk to any Darrington climb with Teva's on your feet, (2) nearly every route has at least some place on it where you might get hurt if you fell, (3) gear placement skills are required and (4) two ropes are required to descend. I say this not to start an argument, but I've seen competent sport climbers who quickly found theirselves over their head in Darrington and I'd hate for somebody to get the wrong idea from your post. It is not like Exit 38. Quote
chucK Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 Geeze Matt, I was just trying to help Dave get a ride! I'm sure he could keep a sporto out of trouble up there.  Seriously though, I gotta agree with you on all you write. I guess I was just thinking of sport climbing by the rec.climbing definition of "bolted so as to allow the climber to concentrate on the moves, not the fall". I think most of the newer climbs fit into this category (course I guess I found Gastroblast does not!). There really are so many more things associated with sport climbing that I didn't even think about, that you so ably pointed out.  See Darrington with THIS GUY!!!   Dave at Darrington  [ 10-10-2002, 04:58 PM: Message edited by: chucK ] Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted October 10, 2002 Posted October 10, 2002 I am the shittiest slab climber in the world these days. Once I was much better... Anyway I think Darrington can be intimidating.... Quote
Figger_Eight Posted October 11, 2002 Posted October 11, 2002 quote: "bolted so as to allow the climber to concentrate on the moves, not the fall". I don't know about you guys, but I've thought about the fall everytime I've climbed there. Quote
