Saffron Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Hi all I know this is a Cascades board but maybe you can help me out. Despite my best efforts to get to the Northwest, I can only seem to find potential work in New Orleans. Dire circumstances for someone who is a hiker, rock climber, and budding ice climber. What sort of climbing, if any, is in the Louisiana area or obtainable on the weekend? Thanks Quote
el jefe Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 found this on rockclimbing.com: "We are flat, the only climbing here comes from plastic, and the occasional building. There's apparently one exposed rock in the state around Alexandria." sounds pretty grim. you'll probably be driving/flying to tennessee or arkansas for rock climbing. ice climbing is somewhat farther away. Choada_Boy Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I recommend suicide, or perhaps quickly establish a hankerin' for catfish grabbin', swamp buggyin', mud bug body suckin', cousin' fuckin', hurricane cleanin' up afterin', or anythin' that ends in " n' ", and you'll be fine. Quote
mountainmatt Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 This is about the only useful website for the area: http://www.southeastclimbing.com/ Time to get used to long drives Quote
akhalteke Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Man, there are really sweet places that are doable in the weekend. It will involve a bit of driving but well worth the drives. The above link has some info. Do a general web search and you will find some. Quote
akhalteke Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Horsepens 40 has got some really good bouldering and I think is the closest fix. I don't know about Arkansas but I heard there is some good stuff there. Quote
akhalteke Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Also, if you ever want to go to looking glass in NC. Let me know. It is great climbing. Long drive from where you are at, but well worth it. Quote

Braydon Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Austin Texas actually has some really nice rock climbing...I have some family in Houston and always go there when I visit. Enchanted Rock http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Texas/South_Central_Texas/Enchanted_Rock_State_Park/ Probably a good 5 hour drive though from New Oreleans. About 3 hours from Houston. Quote
genepires Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 how about a new line of work? what could your work possibly be that you can only find it in new orleans? fancy bead maker? Quote
Saffron Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 I'm always impressed by how helpful people are on this board. Thanks! I'm a civil engineer in the coastal specialization and have a potential opportunity to get involved with the strengthening of the sea defenses in New Orleans. I searched in Seattle but apparently the economy is on life support (I'm in South Africa at the moment). Long drives may it be! Quote
genepires Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 holy broken sea wall! you do have to work in new orleans. maybe you should stay in s africa. or maybe some other international gig like spain? Quote
TMO Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I am always suprised by how many people I meet from Texas that travell abroad to scratch their climbing itch... Why not Looziana?? You will love it there I'm sure, but have to go elsewhere for climbing fo sho. Quote
