prole
Yeah, the Republican strategists, commentators, and analysts down on Palin are just a bunch of elitists!
tvashtarkatena
Well, there are qualifications and then there's populist appeal. Palin's work-your-way-up roots are more similar to Barack's than Quayle's. As with Barack, this is one of the keys to her popularity. Gotta give credit where credit is due. tvashtarkatena
Seems like the GOP is spinning Palin in a couple of ways. Blaming the "mainstream media" (of course)...what, for asking too many wealy hawd queschunz? and then there's the 'underestimation' theory: “Thanks to the mainstream media, quite a low expectation has been created for her performance,” said Ron Carey, chairman of Minnesota’s Republican Party. “The style of Sarah Palin is going to amaze people. She is going to be able to amaze people with the substance she is going to deliver.” And Mr. McCain’s aides disputed the expressions of concern and said that if anything, the barrage of criticism and the performance in the few television interviews she has done gave her a low bar to clear in the debate. “I seriously hope that people continue to underestimate the most popular governor in America and a woman who speaks to the heart of America’s economic angst,” said Nicolle Wallace, a senior adviser to Mr. McCain. Naw...I think we've got Palin sussed just about right.
tvashtarkatena
Palin's in a 3 day intensive preparation session for the debate. IMO, this will produce a stream of memorized soundbites that will have little to do with the question asked. If past performance is any indication, it'll be a 7th grade civics speech verses a guy who has played political hardball with the big boys for decades. If McCain's reasonable performance during debate 1 actually eroded his popularity, Thursday should torpedo it amidships. tomtom
IMO, this will produce a stream of memorized soundbites that will have little to do with the question asked. That's pretty common from most candidates.
tvashtarkatena
No, actually, it isn't during this campaign, which is why Palin sticks out like a sore thumb. Obama answers questions asked with his policy proposals. Even McCain does a far better job at answering the actual question asked than Palin, who seems incapable of doing so. It seems that much of the Right now resorts to this kind of cynical "they're all the same" retort. Um, no. They're not all the same. It's just that your team absolutely sucks, and you know it. prole
"Our superior zingers and one-liners will bury you!" They've actually dumbed down the debate format which, in effect favors the use of sound bites and easy punchlines. Expect a short-lived bump in the polls from the people on whom these imbecilic tactics work.
tvashtarkatena
You can't make silk out of a Moose's ear. Palin's gonna look stupid during the debate, as she has during her other appearances (only this time she'll face an experienced, well spoken opponent who will try to make her look stupid, instead of fawning interviewers trying to help her embarrass herself less) and McCain's numbers will certainly not rise as a result. I'm not sure there's all that much wrong with the debate format. It's how the candidates choose to answer the questions that matters. Someone who's debated Palin more than two dozen times disagrees with you Personally, I hope she falls on her face. But, if she succeeds in never actually answering a question, and instead spouts irrelevant, folsky and populist sound bites, she might attract a lot of the idiots in our voting base. tvashtarkatena
It's precisely this trait that has the national media skewering Palin. What plays well in podunk, AK, doesn't quite fly in the Pros.
prole
A backlash against the "media elites" could work in their favor (if they have played that card one too many times already).
