PaulB Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 If you were planning to head to Squamish before the long weekend crowds show up, there was a massive rock slide last night just north of Porteau Cove and the road is expected be closed for a couple of days. CBC story here. Road updates here. Quote
marc_leclerc Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 are there any cars under there? lets all go put up some sick V10's before they clear the road lol Quote
Winter Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 so how long will it take to drive to squish via littlewet from seattle? Quote
marc_leclerc Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) to get from seattle around lilooet to sqish will take a long time to say the least.. probably 10+ hours Edited July 30, 2008 by marc_leclerc Quote
G-spotter Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 It`s 5-6 hours from Seattle to Lillooet, right? Then it's 2-2.5 hours from Lillooet to Squmish. Quote
marc_leclerc Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 oh... dont you have to go past cache creek...? I thought it was longer but I dont drive yet so I really dont know what im talking about... just take Dru's advice Quote
bstach Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 8 hours and 7 minutes You guys should try teh interwebs sometime... http://www.mapquest.com/mq/3-BHWa Quote
G-spotter Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 You can see in the first photo how it just missed the fake granite, Furry Creek golfcourse sign. Maybe they can replace the old sign with a brand new carved granite boulder now! Quote

AlpineK Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I really curious why the upcoming Olympics generated this massive new highway project. Not that this slide is directly related to that whole fiasco, but it seems like there were a ton of other options. Rail lines come to mind, or better yet putting in a ferry from Vancouver to Squamish. Those options sound a lot cheaper then the idiotic new highway. Quote
ScottPick Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Every time I drove past there I was wondering when it was all going to peel off!!!!!!!! Quote
ScottPick Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Go to Whistler this weekend the hardcore 4x4 way - up Harrison West FSR then up the Lillooet River Valley. Will take some time though as there's about 20km of rough 4x4 road to pass over. The rest is smooth sailing though! Quote
G-spotter Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 actually Harrison West is in 2wd shape right now But bring good tires. Expect one flat, maybe 2. Quote
Lisa_D Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I've always wondered why they didn't put in a train... ferry would cool too. Quote
G-spotter Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I've always wondered why they didn't put in a train... ferry would cool too. There IS a train. The tracks are right next to the highway...buried under the same rocks. Quote
AlpineK Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 (edited) That may be, but a ferry wouldn't get buried in a landslide. They just need a big ferry for the Olympics. In my estimation what would be really cool is if they returned 99 to it's state prior to expansion. While they're at it return the highway from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay back to it's prebuild state. That road was a crazy 2 lane winding road back in the 70s. The kind of road that makes you pay close attention to your driving. Edited July 31, 2008 by Feck Quote
gertlush Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Ugghh, 9 hours today from downtown Vancouver to Squish (stopped for breakfast though). Wouldn't be so bad but every man and his dog, camper van, delivery truck is going down the Duffey lake road now. And they didn't spend 600 million to upgrade the highway just for 2 weeks of Olympics and the 40,000 or so residents of the corridor. Think Maple Ridge of the north more like it. Quote
turn_one Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 actually Harrison West is in 2wd shape right now But bring good tires. Expect one flat, maybe 2. Anyone want to offer up the location of this Harrison West FSR, and where it's picked up? Is this a time saver vs. going north to Lillooet? Quote
G-spotter Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 It's on the maps. It isn't really a time saver, it is shorter distance wise, but for a lot of it you will be driving at 30-40 kmh, so you don't save any time. Quote
jordop Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Govt just announced a major upgrade of the Duffey. Was this in the works, or is it that big wigs were forced to drive the road and lost their minds at how bad the surface is? Quote
