ronco Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I just got the following email from Amazon.com: Dear Amazon.com Customer, As someone who has purchased or rated books by Mark F. Twight, you might like to know that The Poulantzas Reader: Marxism, Law and the State will be released on April 28, 2008. Product Description The definitive collection of the key writings of one of the most influential political theorists of the postwar epoch. Nicos Poulantzas was one of the leading Marxist theorists of the twentieth century, developing seminal analyses of the state and social classes during the crisis of monopoly capitalism. This volume brings together a wide selection of Poulantzas' key writings in legal philosophy and political sociology. Articles include his early pieces on law, his studies of "hegemony," authoritarianism, and social classes, and his debate on the state with Ralph Miliband. WTF? Is Twight a closet Pinko Commi? Is there some hidden, subliminal messages in Kiss or Kill I missed about the masses rising up and over throwing our capitalist overlords? That's it, I'm burning my extensive Twight book collection tonight. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Favorite Writers: Isaac Babel, Yukio Mishima, Hemingway, Robert Stone, James Salter, Ayn Rand, and John Ross Quote
scottgg Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 After reading his books and the articles on GymJones.com, Twight seems like the furthest thing from a Communist. He radiates a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality. His lifestyle and writings shout "elitism" and decry freeloaders. He's vocal about exercising his second amendment rights. He trains US Special Forces personnel. Quote
Dan_Miller Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I received one of those emails from Amazon too. Doubtless, it 'is' a conspiracy of sorts! Quote
johndavidjr Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 What the hell is wrong with a communist? Quote
ScottP Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 A Spectre is haunting Europe? What else would a spectre in Europe be doing? Unless, of course, you are refering to the special executive for counter intelligence, terrorism, revenge and extortion, then the question is self-explanatory. Quote
G-spotter Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Maybe Bond will kill a SPECTRE agent with a thrown Spectre in the new movie. Quote
aussie69 Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 its unfortunate people such as Castro, Stalin, and Hitler have given Communism such a bad name. in reality the goverments these sorts of men ran were forms of dictatorships! communism doesnt varry much from the democratic point of view. in the sense that the community is eventually ran by the people vrs the rich few. its a great ideal and deserves to be recognized as such. Unfortunetly you have assholes that claim to be commies when in fact the're military dictatores... just my 2cents. ~cheers and good climbing~ Quote

Off_White Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 I've always thought of Twight as a nihilist, and to quote Walter Sobchak: "Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos." "Ve are nihilists, ve believe in nusink." Quote
johndavidjr Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Twight gives a really good talk about himself, possibly even worth $5 or $10. (Does he still do the tours?) I especially like his humor. Messner's political views are more interesting. Or at least, they seem to partly exist. Messner, however, apparently has zero sense of humor. They're both really lousy philosophers, political or otherwise. I found it very sad when Fidel had to give up cigars. Quote

johndavidjr Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 (edited) This is certainly NOT "climbing only conversation." Can a moderator please remove this thread to "Spray?" In fact, the premise of this thread is merely silly. Okay. There is no such thing as a "communist" unless you count fools and nutcases........But if you're seriously interested in economics or culture, or actually, just about anything at all, then some understanding of Marx is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, well heck....I do honestly respect the poor schlubs in Pennsylvania, etc., etc., as much as the next person (have you ever actually been to these little places in Pennsylvania? They're worse than _______ !!! Almost as bad as the bad parts of Jersey City!! Except they're all white.. Which I find pretty damned weird...) And am the proud owner of at least two cheap guns last I checked...And I think I read the Bible twice....Despite getting bored to death by the thing...... I kept looking for the parts about abortion and Republicans......... Edited April 20, 2008 by johndavidjr Quote
Frikadeller Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Hitler have given Communism such a bad name. Uhhhh..... Since when was Hitler considered a Communist? (He was quite the opposite) Quote

foraker Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Lots of people read Marx and Smith and all sorts of things. It's called erudition. You might try it sometime. Or, you can go back to your Idaho bunker and resume with your book burning. Does Marx not give off the same BTUs as Smith? Too lazy to chop a cord of wood? Quote
Cairns Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 He trains US Special Forces personnel. Nooo! Not my hero? How could he tarnish his brand? Or is there The Untold Story: US Effectiveness on the World Stage? Extreme Militarism Back in late 60s I heard a Green Beret/whitewater canoeist describe an excercise in rural New England where one team was the guerillas and the other team worked with local authorities. The guerilla team kidnapped the local sheriff. Great stuff but didn't turn the tide in SE Asia. Quote
Hendershot Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Looks like the description on amazon was an error. Like the $15k Mammut belay device. Quote
