He represented reasoned, political intellectual discourse, not dirty tricks, swift boat, and the criminal Karl Rove. The 'right' today is dominated by comparative intellectual midgets aka Limbaugh, Savage, and Ann Coulter, and by Fundi Christian ideology, ranting, slander and person attacks - as you said 'stupid'. In fact, although I am usually a lefty, I'd have to say that our society as a whole has gotten decidedly more 'stupid' since Buckley's heyday and unless you grew up then (or were already grown up) you would not even think such a time ever was. She's got some good points, but I can see Buckley's point. Regardless, Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are worth reading on a long plane trip if for no other reason than to understand postwar conservative thought at a time when socialistic dictatorships were rapidly expanding. He did not bully and was unafraid of taking on those who disagreed with him in a neutral forum. He did not mock and preferred a battle of ideas to decibels. I doubt if we will see his like again, as he was a poor propagandist and turned off the ignorant and uninformed, the base of any would be demagogue.
