foraker Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 It's been a long time since I've heard the man speak, but I recall watching his program, Firing Line, on PBS when I was much younger than today. Always interesting and thought provoking. Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Requiescat in pace. On another note, Senator Byrd had a fall this week. I hope he recovers. Quote
ScottP Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 “Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could.” -WF Buckley Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.” - WF Buckley, Jr. Quote
Jim Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 While I didn't agree with most of what he had to say, you had to appreciate his intellect and wit. The current crop of so-called-conservatives have fallen quite a way down the drain. Quote
marylou Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I'm right with Jim here. Buckley was a great mind, and it's a shame to see the Rs go so anti-intellectual. Guys like Buckley and Will I can respect, even if I don't agree with them. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 I used to love watching Buckley rip his opponents a new asshole with my dad. He was the King of Smarm. It's too bad that the GOP has abandoned folks like Buckley and progressively opted for 'stupid' since Reagan. Quote
dmuja Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Yep, his is really a notable passing, maybe (sadly) the end of an era. He represented reasoned, political intellectual discourse, not dirty tricks, swift boat, and the criminal Karl Rove. The 'right' today is dominated by comparative intellectual midgets aka Limbaugh, Savage, and Ann Coulter, and by Fundi Christian ideology, ranting, slander and person attacks - as you said 'stupid'. In fact, although I am usually a lefty, I'd have to say that our society as a whole has gotten decidedly more 'stupid' since Buckley's heyday and unless you grew up then (or were already grown up) you would not even think such a time ever was. Its too bad. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 The conservatives have allowed themselves to become a freakshow of gun nuts, Bible nuts, war nuts, anti-drug nuts, nut nuts. It didn't need to be that way, but those are the conditions that prevail. Now these fucking kooks, calling themselves 'true conservatives', demand that John McCain, a man who, as far as I can tell, is as principled a politician as the GOP's come up with in a long, long time, to prostrate himself before this shitpile of special interests. And the left is represented by equally low-brow dimwits. Damn you guys are so pathetic with your one-sided myopic delusions. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) Hint: 'one sided' and 'myopic' are redundant, in that they convey the same idea of narrow thinking. Ditto with 'low-brow' and 'dimwit'. Stringing them together makes you sound like a, well, dimwit. Dumbass. Edited February 28, 2008 by tvashtarkatena Quote
Dechristo Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 A great show tonight on Charlie Rose. Out-takes from most of his shows interviewing W. F. Buckley. "Bill" stated, in an '02 interview, that he was "ready for the end". He wrote 54 books and founded, fifty years ago, The National Review. He said he had to flog himself to read Atlas Shrugged. Quote

marylou Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 You should really read some Ayn Rand, somehow, sometime, before you call out others. Quote

tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 They're talking in complete sentences. Paragraphs even. We do not have this kind of TV on my planet. Quote

I've never read any Rand... is it that... painful? Not really that painful, it's just that she goes on and on. It's like whacking yourself on the head with a board over and over. She's got some good points, but I can see Buckley's point. Regardless, Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are worth reading on a long plane trip if for no other reason than to understand postwar conservative thought at a time when socialistic dictatorships were rapidly expanding. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) I agree with the last poster, but reading Rand is one LOOOONNNNG anti-Soviet cliche. Ironically, in her efforts to inject the power of human individuality into her parables, she strips her characters of any real human traits and turns them into comic book heroes. BORING. Mal_Con Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Buckley was quite unlike the current crop. He did not cut others off and preferred to let them make fools of them selves. He did not bully and was unafraid of taking on those who disagreed with him in a neutral forum. He did not mock and preferred a battle of ideas to decibels. I doubt if we will see his like again, as he was a poor propagandist and turned off the ignorant and uninformed, the base of any would be demagogue. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Can we talk about why Bill Cunningham used Obama's full name at McCain's rally now? Quote
