I know that it was the National Guard troops that enforced the law in this case, I'm just not sure if there's a formal process in place for doing so - or if it's something that gets done by state or federal decree.

Hopefully a few progressive towns will up the ante and allow Firemen to choose which burning buildings they turn their hoses on based upon what they think of the occupants' and/or their politics.

Maybe they could use Philadelphia as an example...

Whatever law they would use to keep people from blocking any other business/office's entrance in the city. I'm sure they'd find one if they had to look, which they clearly haven't had to up to this point. The language of their ordinance makes it clear the Marines are unwelcome, but no council could pass a law allowing citizens to blockade a business/office that would stand up to a court challenge.

if a group of Christians were blocking a gay porn shop the ACLU would be all over this.

well they won't know their politics unless that information is gathered and tabulated by homeland security. maybe we can have some sort of national id barcode tattoo system to determine proper firefighter coverage based on if you paid for your firefighter coverage or not.

Actually it would be easier to just set up a government program funded to have arsons burn down the houses of all registered republicans and take all the guessing out of the equation for the firefighters. The land could then be confiscated and auctioned to pay for government health care, needles for heroin addicts, porn in libraries, and, well all kinds of great stuff!

why do you always have to be over the top? we're trying to have a meaningful discussion here.

Again, 1985 was a while back, but I think you could bring some Philly cops out of retirement for that one.

It's a known fact that of the persons who enter gay porn shops, most are Christians; therefore, the public confrontation hypothetically described above would generally be that of Christians versus Christians -- decidedly an intra-Christian affair (no pun intended), and not one of a religious entity attempting to suppress a secular group. As such, the described conflict would be one for neither the courts nor the ACLU. Besides, Christians can always find their gay porn somewhere else.

Next case, please.

There is a process for this. And the guard did have to be federalized for this. It was an unusual step and therefore written about in history books. And I love history books ;)

Silly Jay... to a liberal the ends always justify the means, even if that means overlooking the law.

This is pretty damn funny coming from a guy who supported the unilateral invasion of Iraq.

... that is, as long as someone else went over there to shoot 'em up. :lmao:

If you ask a Berkeleyan, he/she will probably tell you before you ask how much they hate Bush and his unlawful practices. However, in this recruiting office case I think the Berkeleyans are just following the lead of their dear old commander-in-chief, allowing and encouraging actions that are against the law since it is for the greater good. Love-hate relationships can be so beautiful. Angst, conflict, etc. make love so HAWT!
