builder206 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Last Saturday at Feathers I used my brand new dry-treated rope for the first time. At the end of the day, my hands had a rubbed-in dark gray color. It was hard to wash off. The color reminded me of pencil graphite or metallic lead rubbed on a piece of paper, that sort of dull gray. Could it be from the dry treatment? Or maybe the gray color a characteristic of the rock at Vantage? That was my first time there. Quote
TrogdortheBurninator Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 it is mostly likely aluminum dust from you belay device. Quote
builder206 Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 Never happened before. Got a lot of mileage on my gear, only the rope was new. Quote
builder206 Posted October 25, 2007 Author Posted October 25, 2007 (edited) Was your rope made in China? It says Beal but it *was* mighty cheap... Edited October 25, 2007 by builder206 Quote

Hendershot Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 That happens to me all the time. I always chalked it up to friction from the belay device, accumulated dirt, etc. It's pretty normal as far as I can tell. Quote
selkirk Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 mmm, rope gank... It's probably aluminum oxide. Quote

spotly Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I'll 4th that - aluminum oxide. My partner retired his Attache this year and got something different - that's when the grey started showing up on my rope. I'm guessing some belay devices and biners are worse than others. Quote
rob Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Personally, I think it's alluminum oxide. From your device. Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 did you pet any gray squirrels? Quote
