Blake Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Everyone who spends time in the North Cascades knows that it includes some of the most remote terrain in the US... I was recently talking with some friends about peaks that can't be climbed in a day from your car, and we came up with quite a few suggestions on our own. Does anyone know of anyone who has climbed, or even attempted, peaks like Storm-King, Dome, Agnes, or Fury in day? Are there any other parts of the country (outside AK) where so many mountains are mandatory multi-day trips? Quote
goatboy Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I have a friend who climbed Goode NE Buttress car-to-car in summer (no skis or snowmobiles involved!) - but it did take them a little over 24 hours. Still, great accomplishment! Quote
Dannible Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I would think that if you know the area good enough to be wandering around in the dark, those that you list could be climbed in a day (at least Agnes, Storm-King, and Dome; I cant comment on the Fury). The real challenge comes in doing non-standard routes in a day. Quote
Blake Posted August 22, 2007 Author Posted August 22, 2007 I must have memory problems cause I posted on that old thread too. Quote
Dechristo Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I must have memory problems cause I posted on that old thread too. better have that checked out - it could be abreast cancer Quote
kevbone Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Are you talking about the standard semi in shape NW climber? Because if you broaden your criteria for car to car…..I would say Dean Potter could climb any peak of your choice car to car in a day. Quote
Dechristo Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 oh, yeah? I'd like to see him do anything in the Waddingtons car to car in a day w/o an helicopter. anything in the north end of the Wind River Range would be a hump, as well. Quote

Because if you broaden your criteria for car to car…..I would say Dean Potter could climb any peak of your choice car to car in a day. Dean Potter wouldn't even survive some of the approaches. The type of athlete who could come closest would be an elite trail runner capable of soloing loose rock up to ~5.8 Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 the boat ride would be out for anything in the pickets of course... suuuck. that last hill up to hwy 20 from the dam would be absolute brutality Quote
goatboy Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 A camelbak full of your own urine is aid. Quote

El cap and half dome in a day…….How about Peter Croft? Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 croft could pull it off. But I'm with Blake, it's more folks who have the low 5th skills and just grit to run many many many miles of broken terrain and vegetation and suffer through the pain. Climbing pristine splitter granite is hardly the same as wrestling alder at 2am after climbing the entire day (and putting in a half-marathon before that). Followed by another half-marathon. Quote
Gary_Yngve Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I'd like to see someone climb Mt. Crowder in a day. Quote
wayne Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Spectre, Swiss, West Fury are the only ones that come to my mind.East Fury could be done with a boat. Quote
Tom_Sjolseth Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I'd like to see someone climb Mt. Crowder in a day. Or Pioneer Ridge. Quote
rob Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Peaks you can't do in a day There are LOTS of peaks that *I* can't do in a day.... Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 access creek twice in a day sounds like a real fun time Quote
Blake Posted August 23, 2007 Author Posted August 23, 2007 Bonanza, seeing as how there is currently no public bus to Holden. I'd wager Storm King should be on Wayne's list. Quote
wayne Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 What happened to the bus to Holden? BTW is this just a challenge thread for Off the Hook? Quote
Blake Posted August 23, 2007 Author Posted August 23, 2007 Wayne, its just not running now due to a Domke Fire. If you are not allowed to start on the Stehekin or Holden roads, there are a LOT more of these peaks. Quote
wayne Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I hate Domke fires, the worst kind ever. I wonder if Sinister, Leconte, Spider and Snowfield are candidates? Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 NB Fury is definitely not a car-to-car. No way. But if it's just to the top by any route, yes. Challenger has been done via Hannegan. Early Morning Spire would be a handful. Quote
Ponzini Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Can one do Jack in a day? Seems pretty remote... Quote
