underworld Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 i'm aware of the deep (and i mean deep) familiarity this board has with farm animals baa . i'm wondering if that knowledge can be put to use for my benefit... with regards to motorcycle leathers - what's the significant (if any) difference between goatskin and cowhide. - durability? - safety? skull - breathability? sickie - coefficient of friction 8D - etc etc.... any ideas? joblo7 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 both are the actual hide of an animal ,therefore carry its vibrations and should be avoided. to the sunthetics, must ,you need to look. Quote
underworld Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 sunthetics = dinosaurhides = melt the glaciers living cows = pollution = melt glaciers ...kill cows Quote
counterfeitfake Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 FOOD CHAIN! GET USED TO IT! Cows are dying for burgers anyway, might as well wear 'em. I think cowhide is the real deal although some manufacturers seem to want to call their products "leather" and leave it at that... Thickness is also a factor, I think goat and pig hide is thinner. archenemy Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Cowhide is generally a courser leather than goat. I ride with cowhide for safety, but it isn't as comfortable. It is warmer and a bit stiffer. So if you are on cafe bike, the back of the collar will rest in your neck right under your helmet and can a little irritating. The cool thing is that is makes that awesome squeeky leather sound so well! Quote
cj001f Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 goat sacrifices are much more appealing than cow sacrifices unless you feel an inner Kurtz Quote

Dechristo Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 and feels better when worn as a loincloth...many concurring votes from lonely goatherders Quote
underworld Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 but if you drag a cow behind a truck and drag a goat also behind a truck. which one will say uncle first? Quote
strumpett Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 the white one! What do you mean by this statement? Quote
Dechristo Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 the white one! could be the black one, if his mother's or father's brother is named "Tom". Quote
fenderfour Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 I read a bit on gloves that recommended deerskin. They had a bunch of info about how it stretched or some such nonsense and how it was better than cow or goat for motorcycle gear. I think it was all sales crap since the company was (at the time) the only seller of deerhide riding goods. I would look at what the pro riding suits are made of. Those guys no more about abrasion resistant clothing than anyone. Quote
Sherri Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 If thicknesses are the same, I'm thinkin' goathide wears better than cowhide. Depends on who's wearing them. Here, for instance, my vote is for the faux snakeskin. As for myself, I ride in cowhide leathers and don't feel that they're lacking in any way regarding function or comfort. They've bleached out a little over the years, but have otherwise worn well with the miles. Quote
