RuMR Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 how would the place be for young kids?? Much to do there for them?? Summertime of course... I'm between that and city of rocks... Quote
TrogdortheBurninator Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 I havent been to wild iris, but COR seems like it would be a great place for kids Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 city of rocks, man. more of a wide open playground with rocks everywhere. wild iris isn't nearly as user- and kid-friendly throughout the grades (and ambience). Quote
NYC007 Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 hot in the summer, higher elevation, known to have bears in the area. Not too much the is less then vertical. Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 one drawback with the city is the unpredictable weather. i dont know if i would go before july anymore.... Quote
corvallisclimb Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 if you make it to wild iris, why not drive another 50 miles to the sweet water rocks. some great easy granite dome routes as well as some harder stuff. one of the cooler places iver climbed in the usa. Quote
bwrts Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 wild iris (Lander) would be great fun for you and family...spectacualar scenery, nice western folk and there are plenty of mod climbs around Lander to keep kids stoked... Hence the annual climbing festival. GOOD TIMES And you Gotta hike to the waterfall at the end of sinks cyn too! And some must see side trips: Fremont canyon, Devils gate, Split rock, Wind River (very easy hike for kids to Big Sandy Lake). Well, now I am firedup for another trip to Wyoming.... Corvallisclimb: Is the sweet water rocks where Lincoln dome is located?? Quote
corvallisclimb Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Corvallisclimb: Is the sweet water rocks where Lincoln dome is located?? Yes, but I belive your thinking of Lankin dome? Some awsome mulit pitch slab routes. Great dritbagging/camping out there too. Lankin Dome: Bigger images on page 3 of my gallery. We did a route with the odd rating of 5.7+R, and I got to lead every pitch, one of the best routes I've ever done. No more than 4 bolts a pitch, but perfect granite! I found the sweet water rocks to be more moderate, and a better place to hang out than wild iris. Quote
area51 Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 large rattle snakes are not uncommon at wild iris - you can decide how your kids will potentially interact with them... Quote
Marty Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Why limit yourself and the kids? Hit em both. I've been to both and estimate them to be the same kid friendlines, and their not to far (relative) from one another. Quote
Chase Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Rudy... I would highly recommend Sinks. Wild Iris is cool but it is very hard (short powerful pocket pulling). Sinks has some long fun routes that range in difficulty from 5.7-5.13. It is a lot like smith only steeper and more jugs. There is some cool camping there and it will be very easy to park the motorhome right at the climbs. Wild Iris is pretty far from Lander and the road going up there would be difficult to take a motorhome. I agree with the hike up to the waterfall at the end of sinks it is amazing and there are some great swimming holes. Also, if you camp in Sinks you are right on the river so the kids can fish and play in the water also. They can also hang out with Eli and Lander is a fun little town. Anyway, let me know if you go out there, it is only a short drive for me and I will come hang out. Quote
RuMR Posted February 8, 2007 Author Posted February 8, 2007 thanks Chase, et. al... Dude, it would be super awesome if you and R came out... Quote
bigwallben Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Rudy, a friend who recently passed away said that there are mountain lions within proximity of wild iris and that he had someone always around the kids for their safety. Quote
RuMR Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 there's a local cougar at index these days...a poster here has had regular encounters with it...she carries a gun now... My kids are always in eyesight with at least two adults present... so...when you taking the mighty mite out???? Quote
bigwallben Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 a cougar at Index? I'll have my people get in touch with mighty mites agent to schedule his training. Quote
RuMR Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 (edited) mighty mite is a definite...he's stoked but needs to finish up with the skiing...only one month to go... Edited February 15, 2007 by RuMR Quote
Off_White Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 You know Rudy, I looked at this thread, and I don't really see what you are bitching about on Ascensionist.com when you started a thread about how cc.com has gone downhill and stated: you ask a simple question like going to wild iris vs. city with regards to taking children and you get a few reasonable responses from some folks and then it just degenerates into a pile of dogshit... I don't see anything wrong with the caliber of the responses you got. Get a grip Rudy, it's winter, and you prefer warm sunny rock. I think your discontent is internal and has nothing to do with this place. Quote
RuMR Posted February 22, 2007 Author Posted February 22, 2007 ...maybe...man, i miss plain ol' climbing...really really bad...its really bugging me to the point that i'm getting depressed (I know...lame), but i feel that patterns are being set... Quote
