olyclimber Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Did you know that metal used to make pennies are worth more than the coin itself? Thats why they had to make illegal to melt them down. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 next time someone frowns at my self arrest grip I will tell them "but the interweb told me..." Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 That's why they call it "making money". It wouldn't work if it was actually worth something to begin with. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Did you know that metal used to make pennies are worth more than the coin itself? Thats why they had to make illegal to melt them down. Â The same is true for the carbon molecules in many people. No coincidence that it's also illegal to melt them down. Quote
Gary_Yngve Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 They should just get rid of pennies and round all coin transactions up to the nearest nickel. Quote
olyclimber Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 next time someone frowns at my self arrest grip I will tell them "but the interweb told me..."  Here is an interweb article about how info on the interweb isn't reliable.  http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/01/26/wiki  btw, i recommend kungfu grip instead. olyclimber Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 and anyway, those coins are already round. Quote
G-spotter Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Actually, it's not true. The metal in a penny is worth less than a penny. Â But the labour costs to make a penny put the cost of each penny over 1 cent. Â And since coining money is a matter of national sovereignity, they can't outsource penny minting to somewhere with cheap labour. Â Â Mmmmmm minty fresh pennies. Quote
olyclimber Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 how do you know you stupid canadian wank! i read so on the interweb, ergo it is true. get used to it! Quote

dbconlin Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 They should just get rid of pennies and round all coin transactions up to the nearest nickel. Â yes! all the 'developing' countries i have been to do this standard. you sometimes have to buy things '3 for a [monetary unit]' instead of being able to buy just one, so they don't have to deal with worthless units of currency. pennies are so lame. some countries I have been to essentially roung to the nearest dime or larger. and this is in countries where smaller amounts of money are more valuable. why can't we do this in the US? [well, because businesses can make a lot of money by nickeling and diming us (but not penny-ing?). It adds up] whatever Quote
G-spotter Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 you remember back in the 80s, when computers just came in, how bank employees made fortunes transferring all the fractions of rounded off cents, into their own accounts? Â well if you get rid of the penny, retailers are gonna make 5 times that much money. Â besides money is going digital. few people use paper/coins anymore anyway. and a debit card doesn't need to round off to nearest nickel. Â you guys should get with the program and make your low-denomination bills into coins BTW. like the civilized world does. Quote
PaulB Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 And since coining money is a matter of national sovereignity, they can't outsource penny minting to somewhere with cheap labour. The Royal Canadian Mint makes coins for many countries. Currency as well as commemorative stuff. Quote
G-spotter Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Who counterfeits commemorative stuff? Â But I guess there's $20 billion or so in US dollars made in North Korea, so.. Â Â Quote
lummox Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 i once had a girlfriend named penny. she wasn't worth much either. Quote
archenemy Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 They should just get rid of pennies and round all coin transactions up to the nearest nickel. We should also get rid of all the useless riff raff and round up to the nearest human. Quote
hey_wtf Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Actually, they need to keep minting pennies so we can buy things that cost a nickel in Canada. Quote
