Hi, I'm planning to hike in and camp somewhere in the Steven's Pass/Leavenworth area tomorrow and friday and wondered if anyone had any suggestions or had been up in these areas this week. Our plan is to hike in (snowshoes, unfortunately) tomorrow am, ideally for 3-4 hours and set up a camp, then have the option to do a short tour that day, then a longer one with maybe a summit Friday, and be able to get back to the cars at a reasonable hour. It would be great to gain 5000' from trailhead to highpoint. The main goal is a good workout; a couple of big days w/ nice ambience vs. something technical, though a rope and axe could be used. My other concern is the snow- has it set up in the last few days, or are we looking at epic slogging?

Thanks for any suggestions!

A note, each of us has plenty of technical experience but due to all the snow are looking for a couple of long days that are safe and straightforward and will focus on a steady aerobic workout (but are a bit more interesting than a "hike").

Cannon Mountain, from about a mile or so up the trail toward Colchuck Lake, is a moderate climb mostly on west facing slopes that probably saw a lot of wind and a bit of sun recently. It is not a bad ski run, either.

I don't know if it is in any guidebook. I just looked at a topo map and picked what looked like the easiest approach - and it turned out quite well when we went up there to ski it.

After leaving the trail, you crawl through a couple hundred yards of woods and get on a talus fan that will be pretty well covered, and there is a short steepish slope to a second lower angled and open area, another short steepish transion to slopes leading to an open bowl below the peak, and you turn left to climb up some open gullies on a SW facing slope.

does anyone know how far you can get up the road to the Colchuck lake th?

The road is gated just before the bridge over Icicle Creek and not plowed from there back to Icicle Rd.

Who cares? Just go anyway. My guess is TC might not be too bad, but could have gotten a lot of blow in and might be a snow slog. You'll just have to go find out yourself. I might be up in that neighborhood myself this weekend. Skiing of course, though.
