chelle Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Wow that is so cool. I've been so out of the loop lately studying for my boards. Is that an Alaskan volcano? Quote
Alasdair Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 Yep its just south of Anchorage. Not really a big deal since these things go all the time, but cool non the less. Quote
ZimZam Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 is this expected to produce any type of flow, or is it just venting? Also is the surrounding area inhabited. Quote
Alasdair Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 I dont know. Try this... http://www.avo.alaska.edu/ Quote
ZimZam Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Thanks. Answered my questions. Cool link. Quote
Stemalot Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 that's sweet! I had no idea Alaska has active volcano. Quote
Alasdair Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 that's sweet! I had no idea Alaska has active volcano. Seriously? They have about 50 of them. Quote
Alpinfox Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 ... I had no idea Alaska has active volcano. Â Alaska has just about the densest concentration of active volcanoes in the world. The Aleutian islands and SW Alaskan Penninsula are pretty much a continuous chain of volcanoes. Â See lower map below. Red dots are active volcanoes. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 the dusk pic up right now is pretty cool. Quote
ZimZam Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I've been periodically checking it. You could see the progression of the melting snow cap until dark. Interested to see what it brings up at sunrise. Quote
Stemalot Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 that's sweet! I had no idea Alaska has active volcano. Seriously? They have about 50 of them. Â I've been living under a rock... Quote
mattp Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 It must have really blown its stack today. The webcams are almost entirely blacked out - or is it just dark early? Quote
johnkelley Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Darkness comes at about 5:30PM this time of year. No dust in Anchorage yet. Quote
mattp Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Isn't it only 3:00 pm up there when it is 4:00 pm here? The cams were dark at 3:00 or 3:30 pm local time. Quote
EWolfe Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I thought Matt said he was laying off the dust these days!? Quote
TREETOAD Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 There was a fair earth quake last night centered of Vancouver Island I think. Hmmm.. Quote
Kraken Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 still no dust in anchorage, seems the volcano is subsiding...for right now. I still feel the appocolypse in the air. Â Regarding the active volcanos, (and this is just off the top of my head), I believe my geology teacher said there's something like 148 volcanos in the Aleutian chain, there are about 50 active ones today though. Â I kept waiting for something of Spurr's magnitude to come from Augustine...with havoc and chaos running rampart in the streets of Anchorage, people with face masks on, ash everywhere...never happened. Mayhem and madness will have to wait for another day I suppose. Â Many flights to and from Anchorage were cancelled, delayed, or circumnavigated over Canada to avoid the ash cloud. There were some problems, but none that were serious...yet. Quote
EWolfe Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I think a camming device made out of webbing is a stupid idea. Quote
