I was up there on Thursday this week. Tried to get a alpine start to climb Pinacle and Castle Peak but arrived at 0600 and the gate was locked. They opened it around 0800. The road was fine all the way to Paradise. There is a good trail all the way down SR 1 something but once we got off that and headed up to the saddle between Pinacle and Castle there was a lot of snow !!!!!! Lots of fun.

Saturday the sanding truck didn't roll up until 8:00am and the gate opened at 9:00am. The Ranger gave me a bit of grief because I didn't have chains for my Expedition and it was now required to at least carry them in 4x4's when conditions warranted.

 

I also found out that the gate is really closed at 6:00pm. We had a longer than expected day on Lane and had to get the Combo from a very nice lady working the counter at the lodge.

Not urban legend, it used to be 1692 when I had it a few (and I mean few) years back while in the boyscouts. Not sure if it has been changed since then or not. Have not had the need to try it out.
