  10. Hello to all, The North Cascades Wilderness School is now open and taking reservations for the summer programs. We are a small family owned school on a 22 acre campus located in Mazama, WA at the upper end of the Methow Valley offering wilderness based educational programs for youth 11-17 yrs of age and adults. We are not a traditional summer camp but rather a combination of educational and adventure programs striving to accomplish one objective- to unite youth to nature through two approaches. First: enhancing their awareness of their natural surroundings through education from the naturalist (animal and plant identification, animal tracking, forest sounds), environmentalist (principles of forest stewardship) and indigenous survivalist (shelter, water, fire) perspective. Second: experiencing the adventure activities offered by nature by learning the skills for rock and ice climbing, glacier traveling, hiking, backpacking, rafting, canoeing and orienteering. Currently there are only a few programs but we hope to expand to offer programs for adults and day programs for the local kids of the Methow Valley. All programs will focus heavily on naturalism education Whether you are new to the wilderness or have experience we guarantee the knowledge and experiences gained through our program will unite you with nature, positively impact you and leave you with a greater appreciation for nature and what it has to offer. Please pass the word on to anyone you know with kids 11-17. We need all the help we can get. Please go to www.ncwildernessschool.com to learn more Thanks, Josh

  16. Climb: Tatoosh Peaks-Pinnacle/ Castle Date of Climb: 12/9/2005 Trip Report: Myself and a buddy went up last Thursday. Great day and great weather. Did not make it to the summits of the peaks but none the less a great day. Gear Notes: Ski's, snowshoes Pick Approach Notes: Road to Paradise was in great condition, gate was opened at 0800 HRS, good trail from Narada Falls down SH 123 to Reflection Lake. From here there were some tracks we follwed for 1/4 mile but they branched off way to the east so we had fresh tracks all the way to the saddle. Snow was in great condition and there was about 5-6 feet of it.
  17. I was up there on Thursday this week. Tried to get a alpine start to climb Pinacle and Castle Peak but arrived at 0600 and the gate was locked. They opened it around 0800. The road was fine all the way to Paradise. There is a good trail all the way down SR 1 something but once we got off that and headed up to the saddle between Pinacle and Castle there was a lot of snow !!!!!! Lots of fun.
  18. This post is from Kamatz's wife: Attention parents of little climbers between the ages of 8 and 12! I am pursuing my doctorate Psychology (climbing on the side) and am looking for families who are willing to participate in my dissertation research. My study actually has nothing to do with climbing but is about how children cope with experiences with community and school violence and how we as parents can help our children gain the skills necessary to deal with these unfortunate but all too common experiences. Participation in the study lasts approximately one hour and I’m paying $25 and have a small toy for the children (hey, no stealing someone else’s kid for this study…must be your own). I’d like to tell you all about the study and maybe even set up a time for you and your kid to come in to my office. There are many options for appointment times, including after school hours and weekends. Please email me at sekerns@u.washington.edu if you are thinking you might be interested (please note that I cannot guarantee the confidentiality of any information sent by email) or call me at (206)218-3057. Appointments are scheduled at our Fremont office (just north of downtown Seattle). **Your family’s participation in this study is confidential and the report that I write will discuss general trends across all families and contain nothing specific about your family (even if you are really interesting!). Thanks
