pfleeger Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I'm looking to go up to Canada for a backcountry ski hut trip this spring, anyone out there have any recommendations on places to go/experiences. I was planning to be out for a week or longer. Quote
Zoran Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I was last Sunday in Wendy Thompson hut (ACC Whistler Section). It was 10in of fresh snow there. You will love it. Maybe you can combine two close huts around Whistler/Pemberton for seven days? Regards, Zoran Quote
sunyata Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I second that on Wendy Thompson hut. A big group of us spent New Year's 2004 out there, and it was really fun. http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/facility/thompson.html Quote
PaulB Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 Great skiing and much fun was had on this trip to the Pebble Creek hut north of Pemberton. You'd need a group of 5-7 to share the costs of the heli ride(s). Â A good trip with cheaper access would be combining a few days at the Wendy Thompson hut in Marriot Basin with a few days at Keith's Hut in Cerise Creek. Â Get a copy of this book, it has all the info you need. Quote
pfleeger Posted February 17, 2005 Author Posted February 17, 2005 The wendy Thompson hut looks promising, The heli trip makes my mouth water but think it might be outta the price range, sounded like a great time. Thanks for the info. Quote
PaulB Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 If you're not familiar with the area, the trailhead for the Wendy Thompson hut is only about a 5 minute drive from the trailhead for the Cerise Creek hut. Between the two of them (and maybe a day in the Whistler backcountry) you could easily fill up a week with minimal cost and not much driving. Quote
Zoran Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 ... and if you bring tent as emergency option, maybe you can add overnight trip to nearest area, called Casper Creek. We are supposed to go there this coming weekend. No hut there but people told me it's great area for skiing. I'll update you with some info about snow condition next week, if you like. If you are interested to see few recent pictures from the Wendy Thompson trip last Sunday go here: http://www3.telus.net/vazor/P2/index.htm My apologies for foreign language. Site is for my friends in Europe. Z Quote
pfleeger Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 Zoran, How did the trip go/how was the snow. I would totally be intersted with information. The pictures looked good. Are the insides of the huts furnished? Quote
pfleeger Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 PaulB, I do you have any more information on the Cerise Creek hut. I couldn't seem to get info on it. Is it a first come first serve deal? Quote
Zoran Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I didn't go to Caspar Creek. My daughter was little sick. She is better now and we already planning to go to Cerise Hut next weekend. My friends skied Mt. Rohr (near Wendy Thompson hut) and snow was very good. Weather is perfect for some climbs too. Wendy Thompson hut is absolutely OK but not real lodge. To be safe you can always place call and reserve spot. For Cerise hut I think is first come first served. It will be my first time to go to the hut too and I can tell you more soon. Maybe Paul can correct me about reservation for Cerise? Regards, Z Quote
snoboy Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Cerise, like most huts, has table and benches (also has a woodstove but this is not as universal), and a counter, You will want to bring cookinig and sleeping gear. I usually bring a tent to Cerise as it is often busy, and it is first come first sleep. Â There is also a donation system in place for the maintenance of Cerise... The Wendy Thompson Hut is operated by the ACC, which may mean reservations are possible/required? I'm not so sure. Ahhh, here it is: Wendy Thompson Hut details. Quote
PaulB Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 A TR and some pics of Keith's hut and the surrounding terrain here. Â The Wendy Thompson hut is unlocked, so anyone can use it. However, the kerosene heater and Coleman stove are supposed to be kept in a locked closet, and you get the lock combination when you make a reservation with the Whistler section of the ACC. Quote
luwayo Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 (edited) Cerise will be busy on the 26/27th! SAR is on MR1 training. Edited February 22, 2005 by luwayo Quote
swaterfall Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 The Asulkan cabin near Roger's Pass probably has the best spring ski terrain I've ever seen. It's cheap ($6 US / night) and administered my the ACC. Quote
Jim Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 I thought the Elfin Hut had access to some good terrain. Don't know what the snow depth is this year, however. Quote
pfleeger Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 Any one know where i can find weather/base depths for any of these areas. I'm kinda thinkin that there might not be snow up there mid to late march. Thoughts... Quote
