miller Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I've never climbed at either of these areas - are they steep enough to climb in the rain, or are there crags that stay dry (i.e. protected by overhangs)? Thanks! Quote
RuMR Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 how hard can you handle? Answer depends on this... Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Nevermind at E-38 can handle some rain, but seepage eventually happens. World Wall I at E-32 has some big overhangs with protection from elements but you gotta climb hard for the most part except for Reptiles and Amphetamines (5.9) which stays quite dry. But it appears summer is over. Quote
slothrop Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Little Si has several routes at World Wall One that stay dry in the rain, with one 5.9 and a few .11s and up. I can't tell ya much about "and up", but maybe Mr. can. Giant, an ".11c" at Exit 38, would stay dry in the rain since it's in a cave, but I dunno about the finishing move out of the cave. It's a really fun route that you could even lead on gear if you wanted (bolted crack), but it's only one route... everything else within a 10-minute hike of Giant (e.g., Amazonia Wall) would likely be oozing slime. catbirdseat Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 There is a 9 and it get's wet. The 5.10a gets a little wet. I've done one or two 5.10cs and the 5.10d there and they were dry in the rain. Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Note RuMR's liberal downrating in his list from Little Si. I think he wants to hijack this thread into a ratings debate. Quote
RuMR Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I say...sharpest spoon in the drawer! hahahaha tryin' to spice up a boring thread... and seriously...those ratings aren't too outta whack, are they?? Quote
catbirdseat Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 They aren't off by much. Not as much as you indicate, but whatever. I was just trying to help someone. Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Ya sure, what's a number grade or two among friends. But I think it's amusing that "good" climbers often downgrade easier climbs and less often harder ones. No way Whore of Babylon is 14b! It's a hike! Quote
RuMR Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 hmmm...i'd say that they are waaaaaaaaaay off (official ratings, not mine)...compare them to just about anyplace and discuss... Quote
RuMR Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 come on matt, i only pulled stuff down by a LETTER grade, not a number grade...big difference... Quote
RuMR Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I'll see your red rocks and raise you by (1) index paired w/ a yosemite and a rifle... Quote
RuMR Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 raise ya w/ a vedawuo, a gunks, cathedral, seneca and stone mountain w/ an ace of moore's wall and sauertown.... bring it bitch... Quote
Distel32 Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 So far I've only been to one bouldering area that is stiff, I don't know if the rest are soft though..... Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 come on matt, i only pulled stuff down by a LETTER grade, not a number grade...big difference... Well, maybe a couple of letter grades here and there.....and of course "Reptiles" as a 7/8. But age and injury force me to defend ratings in lieu of chestbeating. I just put on my "rating conversion" glasses when I visit stiff areas. My entries there would include Eldorado, Lumpy Ridge (beware 5.7-5.9 Kor classics), and Granite Mountain, Arizona, where many a Yosemite hardman has been bouted! Quote
matt_warfield Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 Go try Stihl Fingers (12a) to test your theory. But not in the rain for that one..... Quote
