suckbm Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Is there anything wrong with spray painting carabiners, nuts, hexes, or cams so you can keep them seperate from your partners? Or any tips for doing this. thanks Quote
Blake Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Nail polish is quick, easy, cheap, and less messy than spray paint. Quote
Bug Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Spray paint rubs off quickly except for in the etchings of the brand names etc. Just spray dots on those. Nail polish lasts longer. Quote
Kevin_Matlock Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 How about a colored electric tape? They sell all colors and I bet would last longer. Just a thought. Quote
knelson Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Another vote for nail polish. And if you get some obnoxious color and paint it over the brand name of your gear, then when/if it wears off you still get it in the etchings as Bug noted. Getting the most obnoxious color gives you better odds you won't find someone with the same choice in colors! Â Also, electrical tape can get ugly. When it finally decides to depart from your gear, it leaves a gooey sticky mess. If you're bound and determined to use tape for marking, get some of the thin pinstriping tape they use on cars. The adhesive on that is waaaaaay more aggressive than electrical tape and has a great chance to stay put. I kick myself for putting electrical tape on some of my stuff early on - made a mess than tends to get everywhere. Â -kurt Quote
Distel32 Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 DO NOT USE SPRAY PAINT!!!!!!! Â crazy polish bob spray painted all his gear orange, and now every time we go climbing it rubs off on the rock and leaves it orange. Â If you want to cover more of your gear than just using nail polish just go get a can of AUTOMOTIVE paint. Â It won't come off and you can cover more than with a little bottle or two of nail polish. whirlwind Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 tape dosn't last all that long and it turns inot litter when it falls off Quote
catbirdseat Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Just yesterday I found an HB offset nut that was coded with a unique identifier- a single band of black electrical tape! Certainly no one else would think of that. Quote
Camilo Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Don't use pink nail polish, I've already got dibs. If it's pink, it's mine! Quote

Certainly no one else would think of that. Â This just shows their clumsy attempt to make their gear unique. If I WERE to use tape, I'd paint the tape with some nail polish! Quote
Dru Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 I put my gear in the reactor for half an hour and irradiated it. Now i can easily check that the gear is mine with the Geiger counter I have built into my keyring. Also it is "hot" enough to use as a warmth source at unplanned bivis! Quote

MATT_B Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 I spray paint all of my pins black. Works great! I am missing a few thought. If anyone has any black pins they must be mine Quote
Wopper Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 How about a colored electric tape? They sell all colors and I bet would last longer. Just a thought. I have used an ugly off brown electrical tape on all my biners, cams and stoppers for the last 7-8 years and have not had any problems with it coming off. Works for me. Quote
ken4ord Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I am glad all you guys mark your gear, it makes it easy to find my unmarked gear. Quote
texplorer Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 If your brave you can stamp your gear lightly with your initials. It doesn't seem to get done much anymore but I have found several older biners with the owner's initials on the gear. Quote
carolyn Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Don't use pink nail polish, I've already got dibs. If it's pink, it's mine! Â or MINE! "hot pink" is the choice of color for me. Quote
Extrablue Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Use two colors, I nail polished my stuff orange and within a couple months noticed another fifteen people who had. But I say use the colored electric tape my partners been using it for years and he has yet to have a issues with it. Also you can use it to mark slings, daisychains etc. Quote
Dr_Crash Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 Don't use pink nail polish, I've already got dibs. If it's pink, it's mine!  No, mine. Damn it, I picked pink 'cause I thought it wouldn't be "climber" enough as a color  drC Quote
