Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 Here, read this and let the Doctor know what you think. Please? Thank you so much, and do have a pleasant day. Quote
gapertimmy Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 I think as long as DFA continues to refer to himself in the 3rd person, he will have nothing but success with his high desert hostel. Quote
jkrueger Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 To hell with Cogcentrix! They are the Devil in disguise, tempting you with the lure of easy money! The last thing you want is to have to answer to The Man and have them dictate to you how to operate your business. Smith was the birthplace of U.S. sport climbing, so what better place to start a climbing hostel? It's a good idea! Throw together a business plan and use it to get someone to invest some capital... Quote
erik Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 smith is also birthplace to wide spread american chipping.... vie va la smith so if you would want to follow with the ethics of the area...i think cogcentrix hotel wouls fit perfectly... Quote
Bianca_Piaggio Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 I think the Good Dockter would be doing the world a great service by opening a climber's ranch in the neighborhood of Smith Rock. Seems that particularly the European types and long-range road trippers would enjoy such a place. Now, how exactly was it going to pay for itself....hm, that was the part that seemed a little, er flaky to me. Obviously referring to oneself in the third person will get DFA part of the way, and it's a smashingly stylish thing to do, but at $10-$15 per head per night and probably not really year-round at that, well, hmmmmmm....? But I do think it's a super-cool idea! Quote
sk Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 not a bad idea... I think I read that there are 10 acres for sale that is RIGHT next to smith. I would prefer to walk than shuttle. but I would camp there as long as you charge for a family and don't make me pay 5$ for each of my children.... here is a thought have showers available for just the cammpers as well maybe pay IF you use them??? another idea... you could ask for voenteers to staythere and take $, clean bathrooms etc. the upshot would be staying there for free for a few weeks Quote
jkrueger Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 I know that the Grasslands, though free, provides the most uninspiring camping and the most dirt per square foot that I have ever experienced. And after paying $20 for a campsite for 4 people, and being told to quiet down at 10:00 pm, I have vowed never to return. This market research leads me to believe that there is a definite need for what you propose. I would recommend adding a slackline though... and perhaps a smoker's shack! Quote
icegirl Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 If I remember correctly there is a Hostel in Mazama, for super cheap, right by the climbing area (summer and winter) Don't know what it's like though, as have family within 30 miles, and figured that I'd get Kudo points and free breakfast/coffee if I made the drive. Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted August 2, 2002 Author Posted August 2, 2002 Thanks for the input! The volunteer idea is a goodie. That would maybe enable the Doc to actually climb and own a business, which is usually unheard-of. The sliding fee scale is also a key idea that the Doctor had. Paying for services that you don't want or need is stupid, and having that flexibility in pricing would enable more people to make use of the facility (and hopefully bring in some dough). And yeah, there is some property for sale near Smith, and the prices aren't too gross. But first DFA needs to learn how to run a business. Details, details ... Anyway, Dr. Flash Amazing thought this would be a great alternative to the currently available sleeping options, but the apparent lack of anything like this in the country left him a little skeptical. If any of you happen to spread the word and relay any input you get, the Doctor would be much obliged. Perhaps a reward in the form of free vouchers to the Amazing Clinic good for an exam or some such. [ 08-01-2002, 12:18 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ] Quote
sk Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 Here is a great idea... higher jkrueger to run bussines as he has a degree in said profession... then I could climb ALLLLLLL the time Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted August 2, 2002 Author Posted August 2, 2002 Something tells the Doctor that he won't exactly be able to afford paying someone with an MBA to run his joint. This is a climber's hostel we're talking about, not a soon-to-be corrupt utility company! Of course if he could find some tax loopholes and get DFA some large, uh, "loans" through the company, maybe we can talk. Quote
erik Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 dfa, i think that maybe if you intertwined local interest, big business and climbers then you certainly could make out quite well... think..... 'COGCENTRIX CLIMBERS HOSTEL' i like it!! have climbers run the plant during their stay. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted August 2, 2002 Author Posted August 2, 2002 *Dr. Flash Amazing smacks his forehead in amazement* Good cripes, man! That's it! The Doctor will just call up the tycoons at the Coge', tell them the protesting will "conveniently die down" if they agree to make one small concession, and get them to roll out the red carpet for the cragging set. And of course hook DFA up for life ... Everybody goes home happy! They could harvest all the steam from the plant, and re-condense it to use for shower water! Plastic holds all the way up the smoke stacks! It's perfect! [ 08-01-2002, 12:45 PM: Message edited by: Dr Flash Amazing ] Quote
Guest Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 Dr. FA has a good idea. Add PBR on tap for a $1 and it's an excellent idea and bound to get more business. Of course I would never approve of the ruckus that would result. Some of us have important early morning redpoints and yoga routines that we need sleep for. Quote
richard_noggin Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 Dr flash is this where all the crag.com sprayers are heading now the crag.com is down? Where is that kid that everyone used as a whip'in post Ryan? Let me say from me and my crew welcome Quote

I'm not so sure about this third person thing... you might recall that it didn't work out so well for Bob Dole. Pretty soon DFA will be hustling Viagra. Quote
Bob_Clarke Posted August 2, 2002 Posted August 2, 2002 The good doctor is in! Nice to see you hanging around the trailer park bulletin boards Senior Send. Your idea is incredibly elementary and with some effort I know the only hurdles are a good business plan and VC. Go man go. Quote
