Blake Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 (edited) Stubai Ultralight Crampons? For an all around light crampon to be used where I'm hiking in quite a ways for most approaches, mostly in the North Cascades, what would you think? The reviews seem good, but there are only 2 of them. Any experience/advice? Stubai crampons page Edited February 17, 2004 by Blake Quote
layton Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 agreed. camp makes the same damn thing too. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 sutbai ultralights ... they're GREAT! check 'em out at pro mountain sports in seattle if you want to fondle some. they'd be happy to give you advice/suggestions via email as well. they sell a ton. Quote
Ade Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 I got mine from PMS and they rule (no this isn't a viral marketing campaign for Jim's store). Ideal for Cascadian approaches, don't try and climb steep/hard ice with them and you'll be fine. Also remember that if you go ultra light and fit them to a pair of approach shoes or runners they're pretty uncomfortable for extended wear. A light shoe will not give your foot any support and the crampon has to be strapped relatively tight to stay on a flexing foot. It's not unbearable but my feet weren't loving life after a couple of hours of this sort of thing. For crossing slushy glaciers these crampons, plus approach shoes and a couple of Safeways' bags are the way to go. Quote
Blake Posted February 17, 2004 Author Posted February 17, 2004 Awesome, thanks. Yeah, I wan just planning on wearing them on the outside of some stiff hiking boots for places Like Sahale, and other such peaks. Quote
layton Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 don't get the Kahtula's. no front points sux even on moderate slopes. Quote
Rodchester Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 For the prce you can't beat these! Quote
dylan_taylor Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Also, check out the aluminum ones from Trango. The strap on variety don't wear holes in the front of your tennies quite as bad as the stubais. http://www.trango.com/showitem.cfm?catnum=27&itemnum=164 You can also get them in the step-in or neumatic variety as well. slothrop Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 For the prce you can't beat these! Nah, go for the Stubais if you can spare the cash. The Cassins' antibots don't fit and they're hard to adjust. Quote
Blake Posted February 19, 2004 Author Posted February 19, 2004 Picked some up at the PDX Req Equip INC (RIP ) Does the strap go from toe tto the inside ankle part, then around the front of the leg to the clip? Around the leg a couple times? Stupid Austrian company, and their ridiculous language. Quote

The Cassins' antibots don't fit and they're hard to adjust. True, I had to manhandle the antibots, but got them to fit. They are functional, though, and worth it at that price. Quote
