catbirdseat Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 I was climbing some alpine ice and my crampon popped out while pulling a bulge. I struck my right knee. It hurt, but I shook it off and kept climbing, because I had no choice really. The pain went away, or at least I didn't notice it, on the way out to the trailhead. Four or five days later after two runs of two and four miles, the knee started hurting again. It is painful going down stairs. The pain has been there for four days now. It is to the point where I'll take the elevator if given a choice. Should I go see the doctor? Quote
Stephen_Ramsey Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 Hello Catbird,  As a long-time runner, I would recommend it (seeing a doctor). Especially if you can find a doctor who knows something about sports-related injuries, and who will not hesitate to refer you to a specialist if necessary.  Hope your knee is feeling better soon.  Cheers, Steve   Quote

erik Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 cbs  one thing is you mentioned ice climbing. i have had what i would equate to my knee freezing. ice chimeny pitch and late that night...i killed...so bad..it didnt matter what position i had my legs in......too bad we were driving home and i had no choice other then to deal with it.  it went away for me in a few days.  other then that i have never had knee problems(knock on wood!)  Quote
scot'teryx Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 it always best to get it checked out, especially if you have insurance. Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 29, 2003 Author Posted September 29, 2003 It is interesting that it hurts only goind DOWN stairs, but not at all going up. Quote
sketchfest Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 Where on the knee does it hurt? Inside, outside, under the knee cap? Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 29, 2003 Author Posted September 29, 2003 On the centerline under the knee cap. It is quite sharp and localized. Quote
Coopah Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 sounds like a possible fracture of the patella. better get to the doc!!! And quit walking downstairs. until it heals... Quote
layton Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 yeah, maybe not a fx but a bruising of some of your extensor lig. possibly a tear near the insertion. try med. or lat. rotating your leg (sit on a chair and swing your foot to the left and right keeping your thigh still). Just a slightly educated guess. Quote
Courtenay Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 Just a note to anyone suffering from any sort of contusion or impact fall/hit: remember RICE within the first 72 hours -- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. It helps stop the swelling and is great as a preventative measure. See a doc, bypass the running temporarily as the jarring may be affecting it. My best guess is because you were able to walk on it for a few days WITHOUT pain, it may NOT be a fracture, but ya never know. I'd say it may actually be a result of a slight gait change -- your body subconsciously trying to protect the hit leg -- which is resulting in the pain with running. Get it checked out. Quote
catbirdseat Posted October 1, 2003 Author Posted October 1, 2003 Doc says the patella is not broken. If it were I wouldn't even be able to walk at all without severe pain. Take two Aleve twice a day, ice it, elevate it and don't do anything that makes it hurt. Gave me a radiology order which I am to use to get an x-ray if it doesn't improve in a couple days. Okay, Doc! Courtenay Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 And that cost your insurance how much? Gee, didn't I say that above, for free? Just kidding. Good for you for finding out for sure. Quote
catbirdseat Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 I'm going to test the knee tomorrow. Hope it isn't too soon. Quote
Stefan Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 I am no expert, but could it be a miniscus tear if not a broken bone? If so, XRAY won't pick it up. Quote
catbirdseat Posted October 7, 2003 Author Posted October 7, 2003 I went climbing on it last Saturday and it was fine. It is fine now. I'm a happy boy. Quote
