Scores Killed, Hundreds Injured As Para-Military Extremists Riot - Could It Happen Again?

BOSTON, April 20 - National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed on April 19th by elements of a paramilitary extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimated that 72 were killed and more than 20 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.

Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement. Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices.

The governor, who described the group's organizers as "criminals," issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government's efforts to secure law and order.

The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed wide-spread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault weapons. Gage issued a ban on military-style assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early April between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms. One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that "none of these people would have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned their weapons over voluntarily."

"Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition. However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government's plans.

During a tense standoff in Lexington's town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange.

Ironically, the local citizenry blamed government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored, armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the guard units. Colonel Smith, finding his forces overmatched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat.

Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor has also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops. Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock , who have been identified as "ringleaders" of the extremist faction, remain at large.

I think I can reply to that:

Gulf War I - we were there.

Afghanistan - we were there, and still are.

Gulf War, Jr. - no we didn't "officially" participate, because we disagreed with the manner in which GWB pushed his personal vendetta down the world's throat. BUT, if you check the roster, you'll find that many of the countries that signed onto the "Coalition of the Bought and Paid For" sent no actual material support of any kind. But Canada? There were more Canadian troops attached to and serving alongside US forces in combat in Iraq than most of your so-called "Allies" combined. And we increased our commitment in Afghanistan by something like 5,000 troops specifically so that US Forces in Afghanistan could be re-deployed to Iraq. The Canadian Navy has been on station in the Gulf region for several years now, and at an increased level since September 11, assisting US and other naval forces in intercepting suspected arms shipments, Al Quaeda fugitives, etc.

Believe it or not, Trask, we've been there all along, even though we declined to sign George's stupid little self-agrandizing piece of paper.

And I hesitate to remind you, Trask, but when the shit REALLY hit the fan, in 1939, the US - that great defender of Liberty and Freedom - refused to get involved until late 1941, and then only because the Japanese hit you so hard you've never forgotten it.

Greag, Johnny Horton sang it best in his song, The Battle Of New Orleans.

In 1814 we took a little trip

along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.

We took a little bacon and we took a little beans

and we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

*Chorus*

We fired our guns and the British kept on comin'

There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.

We fired once more and they began to runnin'

down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We looked down the river and we've seen the british come

and there must have been a hunnerd of 'em beatin on the drum.

They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring

but we stood behind our cotton bales 'n' didn't say a thing.

Chorus

Ol' Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise

if we didn't fire our muskets 'till we looked 'em in the eyes.

We held our fire 'till we seed their faces well

then we opened up the squirrel guns and really gave em....

well we

Chorus

Well they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles

and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.

they ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em

down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We fired our cannon 'till the barrel melted down

so we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.

We filled his head with cannonballs, powered his behind

and when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind.

Chorus

Yeah they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles

and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.

They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em

A down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

well now there is also a song that goes

The War of 1812

Oh come back proud Canadians

To before you had TV.

No "Hockey Night" in Canada -

There was no CBC.

In 1812 - Madison was MAD

He was the President you know,

He thought he'd tell the British

Where they ought to go.

He thought he'd invade Canada.

He thought that he was tough.

Instead we went to Washington....

And burned down all his stuff!

And the Whitehouse burned burned burned

And we're the ones that did it!

It burned burned burned

While the president ran and cried!

It burned burned burned

And things were very historical!

And Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies

"Wah! Wah! Wah!"

In the War of 1812!

Now Hillbillies from Kentucky,

Dressed in green and red,

Let home to fight in Canada,

But they returned home dead.

It's the only war the Yankees lost...

Except for Vietnam....

And also - The Alamo....

And the bay of...Ham!

The Loser was America.

The Winner was ourselves.

So join right in and gloat about

The War of 1812!

And the Whitehouse burned burned burned

And we're the ones that did it!

It burned burned burned

While the president ran and cried!

It burned burned burned

And things were very historical!

And Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies

"Wah! Wah! Wah!"

In the War of 1812!

segway into Johnny Horton remix

In 1812 we were just sittin' around

Mindin' our own business

Puttin crops into the ground

We heard the soldiers coming

And we didn't like that sound.

So we took a boat to Washington

And burned it to the ground!

Oh we fired our guns

But the Yankees kept a comin'!

There wasn't quite as many as there was a while ago.

We fired once more

And the Yankees started runnin'

Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!

Oh they ran through the snow

And they ran through the forest

They ran through the bushes where a beaver wouldn't go!

They ran so fast

They forgot to take their culture

Back to America....

(and golf and Texaco)

So if you go to Washington,

It's building clean and nice,

Bring a pack of matches.....

And we'll

Burn the Whitehouse Twice!!!!

And the Whitehouse burned burned burned

And we're the ones that did it!

It burned burned burned

While the president ran and cried!

It burned burned burned

I bet that made them MAD!

And Americans ran and cried like a bunch of little babies

"Wah! Wah! Wah!"

In the War of 1812!

One of the more recent "Ex-Presidents" - I think it was Bush Senior, maybe Reagan or Clinton, can't recall exactly - told how he used to go out onto one of the balconies of the White House from time to time. If you look up near the top of some of those columns from the back side apparently you can still see some of the charred wood. Seems we didn't do a very thorough job of incinerating the place, and they were able to save a good part of the original structure. Anyway, he used to go and look up at this blackened bit of history just to remind himself that nobody and nothing is completely invulnerable. He said it used to bring him back down to earth when he got to feeling a bit cocky about being top dog and all.

Canada has a Navy? yellaf.gif

Yep, sure do. And pretty much the whole thing has been in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea since Gulf War Sr. That's a nice picture of about 1/6th of it in your link. But at least ours is fully deployed (well, except the part that's in dry-dock), not sunning in Hawaii or running away from storms like the majority of the US Navy. Why the Hell do you bother building all those things if you're not going to put them in the game? wink.gif
