I have been getting a visit from a woodpecker every morning around 6:30 or 7:00. He sits up on top of my metal chimney and hammers away at the top of the chimney. The resonating chimney and fireplace roars through my house. He is quite wiley and takes off whenever I open the door to get a shot at him with the bb gun. He also takes off if I light a piece of newspaper and smoke him out but I don't want to get up in the morning to make a fire anymore. Suggestions?

Buy some chicken wire, and fashion it into a large tube or box about 6" larger than your chimney, and place it over the top of the chimney so he can't get at it. Might be kind of ugly, but it should keep his ham-ham-hammering ass off your chimney.

get up earlier than the bird shows up and lay ambush on him. a bb gun isn't enuf. no less than a pellet gun, or better yet .22 short ( quiet and deadly). Shoot him in the back of the head between the ears (if he had any).

Maybe he doesn't exist. Except in your mind as part of your guilty conscious telling you to get your lazy ass out of bed already because its time to get up and train or go to work. Geek_em8.gif

hes doing it cause of the noise it makes. its mating season right now and it is the males that "pound pecker". the louder the noise, the stronger the male and the chicks dig it. he's goin for the metal cause its louder than wood. sort of like stuffing a rolled up sock down your pants. shooting him is pretty drastic when all you have to do is wait a week or two. just leave the cat on the roof for a while, till mating season is over. yellaf.gif

or muffle the metal, wrap some foam around it, no more prob. - if it dont make noise he wont hit it.

putting a fake owl on the chimney might help too.

those owls don't work. we put a wire thing that spins on our boats. bugs the seagulls...they won't land and shit.

I had the same probelm with the a woodpecker once. I shot it everyday for a week with a pellet gun (It was a weak ass pellet gun). If my neighbors weren't so close I would have brought out the shotgun from day 1.
