Knee problems

About a week ago I tweaked both of my knees on a long mountain climb. It hit me real quick, a very sharp pain that started on the outside of both knee caps (tendon?). The only way I could bear it was to keep my knees from bending. Needless to say it was a very long walk out of there.

Went to a doctor the next day who wasn't very impressed. Told me to take advil and strengthen up my quads. He led me to believe I pushed too hard and was just sore. A week later and I have no improvement, still walk without bending my knees.

Do I get a second opinion or just wait this out? The weather up here is beautiful and I'm sick of the gimpy crap!

Sounds like my IT band when I yanked on it glissading sun cups at high speed. I was in good shape and it still took four months for a total recovery. Don't wait. Get someone who can figure it out and do what they tell you. I took a lot of B12 and water. It's food for yanked wires.

I agree it's probably your IT band (Ilial Tibial?), which runs on along the outer side of your knee. It's an overuse injury common to runners, and it sound like climbers and hikers as well. Damn thing gets inflamed and hurts like hell when it rubs and the only thing you can do is lay off, ice a lot, and who knows what else. It can hit you out of nowhere, totally sucks. Go see a physical therapist or get a second opinion. Sounds like the person you saw didn't know shit from shinola.

This sounds identical to the problems I had/have. I would have to guess that you do not streatch prior to hiking. YOu need to start. It is your IT band, and the way to solve the problem is by streatching. I could not walk correctly for a couple of weeks after I got this for the first time. Start streatching now. I had to streatch every day for 2-3 months untill I increased my flexability sufficiently to fix the problem. In addition I still have to streach every time I hike. There are several streatches that work. your typical hamstring streach is first, and then streaches for the IT band. It took me a long time to find one that worked for me. When you get the right one you will know it because you will hate doing it. If you start now you might be able to hike again by summer. As far as going to the Dr goes... YOu will go in, they will tell you to streatch and tell you if it still hurts in two months come back.

Yes it is yourIT band... but it can be so much more. I had similar problems for 2 years until I found a doctor that secialized in treating athletes. It was for me alot of bad form. Specifically placing too much load on my quads and not enough on my glutes. I went thru 4 months of rehab. I learned to sptretch and stringthe the right stuff but more importantly they taught me the correct form. GO see a specialist.
