Vibe coding

Anyone out there "vibing"?  I just started playing around with Claude.   Before I was thinking hiring out for a developer to handle creating new functionality (and restoring some things we used to have).  But Claude has me thinking otherwise, and maybe we can keep it inhouse. The most immediate need is for a Trip Report Search capability.

Search all the Trip Reports by:

• Area/TR Forum
• Author/Submitter (V2 can include other party members if they are tagged into the TR)
• Month or Month Collection (Season)
• Date Range (Radio button so time/date would be radio button/either but not both)
• Keyword
• Photos-Yes/No
• FA/FWA/FFA ....maybe just start with FA yes/no
• ?

 

My day job has me pretty busy to the point of exhaustion on many days, and my free time is often trying to find time to either get exercise for myself and my dog. I do plan on retiring at some point in a couple years (though that could happen sooner, as that is the way the world is these days).  So I have limited time, which will change in the future.  But for now....

Anyone else trying out Claude or another model? I'm considering purchasing Claude right now.  I'm also looking a one of Jetbrains offerings, though I'm still researching that.

Unbelievable....this is version .01.  It has issues.  But I just made this in an hour using natural language prompts.

Does it work well?  Not really. But as a POC pretty cool.  I'm not a coder.   

I ran out of tokens for the day, so I'll pick it up the next time I have time.

Chatbots are terrible at lots of things, and are imposing untold externalities on the world but, yeah, they're really fucking good at helping humans write instructions for computers. I have to use claude code for work coding and it's incredibly helpful. You of course have to check things, and it can be super dumb, because it does not actually understand anything. It is rearranging words from the internet, not expressing some internal representation of the world. But it's super useful. I haven't used the free version since work started paying for it, but in the past there was a big difference in how good they were.

Oh I quickly realized that buying the Pro version was the thing to do.

im using Claude code, which is suited to my level…not an IDE.  
 

ive worked with some really smart people and the process it uses is uncannily similar. The actual coding part is more black box but when it troubleshoots it tells you what it’s checking and why.  It took it like 8 iterations to get it right but it did. 
 

I thinks the one part I’m wondering about it how good can it get at actually enabling my vision of what I want. It may just come down to my ability to write prompt rather than Claude not being able to execute.

added autocomplete to the search for author.   it continues to be wonky. but i can continuelly iterate this to improve.

made the search results look like forum view.  dang this is pretty fun.

currerently results are just showing any post in a TR forum for a user.  I'll get that fixed.  Also I think I'm going to make a tool for fixing TRs which Mods and Admins can use to fix TR posts to get them properly formatted.  We may also be able to search by tag.

But I'm out of tokens for the day, so next time.

THANK YOU for keeping this site going. It represents the work - outdoors and online - of thousands of people over 25ish years. There are some real historical gems here.

I just used the search feature to find a JasonG TR I'd never seen for the Little Yoho Valley.  It gets me excited for my trip next week!

I just added a "first ascent" selection in the search tool.

You can search by FAs in a region by season, or whatever you want to slice or dice it.

if you know of an FA that doesn't show up, then PM me a link. I'll add the tag and it will show up in search.

This is pretty fun.  Please add your feature enhancement ideas here.  I will see what I can do.  I have other ideas, but this is going to get better everytime I touch it.

added "best of cc.com" to the search TR search function.  Keep in mind this is limited to TRs, so if not in the TRs forums then those won't show up.  but the TR search is all about TRs so that is why.

just did a little rearranging of the form and check boxes in TR Search.  Also note I moved it to the far right on the top menu. I also renamed the "Trip Reports" to more accurately be "Submit TR".

Probably all I'll do today unless i get some burning idea.

Just fixed a bug in the search tool where if there was a space in the name it would search "Lucas+Ng"  and not "Lucas Ng".  Gotta be able to see @Lucas Ng and EVERYONE's TRs in there!

I just happened to notice this. Claude is very smart, but its not infabblile.   Do let me know if you notice anything else.

I just need us to crowd source ideas for making this site better code wise or any way.    Lets hear your ideas.  A LOT more just became possible.

I think the only tweak that might be needed to to winnow out some "TR" returns for a user where they just commented on a TR but weren't the author.  Maybe that is the way to thread it....ask Claude to only show TRs where they are the first post? I mean, when you are searching for a TR by author.

ooooh....would be cool to be able to sort search results by date.  Right now if I do a user search, seems like it doesn't organize perfectly by date.

Also was able to do a workaround for the TR only returns by author by searching for a username and then putting "TR" in the keyword box.

Have I really put in 195 TRs over the years?!

Yes that is a current bug. I need to do analysis on how to best drop the non-TRs. 
 

I’ve also started on a TR fixing tool admins and mods can use to fix broken TRs that are missing info or are incorrectly formatted. But to do that I need a vision of what a “correct TR” looks like.  Then I can use that as a basis for fixing all of them or at least selecting them for corrections
