hanman Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Mostly clear all the way to 8 mile TH (small amount of snow at mile 6), 3:00 rock has typical snow ramp at base. A small sinkhole has developed near the TH, but should be a relatively easy fix. Squire Creek on the other hand reportedly has a washout 1/2 mile prior to previous years parking lot... M. Hanna Quote
mountainsloth Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Thanks Hanna! How does the illusion wall look? Ready to approach and climb? Quote
hanman Posted May 20, 2017 Author Posted May 20, 2017 Haven't been up, waiting for further healing from shoulder surgery ~2 months ago Roads washed out but we're used to that drill up there right? mh Quote
benmurphy Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I was out there two weekends ago and there were trees down over the road to exfo, shortly after the bridge, planning to go back out this coming weekend with a chainsaw. Quote
mountainsloth Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Hanna, happy healing. Ben, I too ran into the downed trees on exfo rd. Only adds an extra 1/2 mile. You could get the majority clear with a hand saw. Quote
curtveld Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Exfo road is clear, with a little help from Mr Stihl. Enjoy! Quote
curtveld Posted December 10, 2017 Posted December 10, 2017 Road's a little rough from the fall rains, though not too bad. Bottomed out the Corolla at one of the dips, so bring a pickup or SUV. Lots of 3 O Clock Rock is dry and nice, at least the east and southern exposures! Northern slabs still a bit wintery! 1 Quote
Otto Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Squire Creek Road is clear to the new (as of last year) parking lot. This winter saw further erosion, another cave-in, 20 feet upstream from the one which cut off the old parking lot. It can no longer be driven around. There is a new sign, but nothing blocking the road. Bill Enger Quote
curtveld Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 Thanks Bill. Also, there is some road work scheduled for the #2060 this summer. Supposed to start in July and only create temporary delays on weekdays. Bigger dips and less potholes, for a while anyway. Quote
curtveld Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 As of 9-27-18, the 2060 is closed for repairs! Operator told me will take a couple of weeks. Quote
genepires Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Did you get to climb on Thursday? That is great news that they are doing repairs. Shows that they value the area. Quote
curtveld Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) You can thank the multi-interest group (timber industry, enviros, Forest Service, politicians) called the 'Darrington Collaborative' that created a thinning sale north of town that paid for this work! The #2060 was the beneficiary because it is so popular among locals and climbers alike. And climbers have shown their commitment by putting their own efforts into maintaining this road for years, notably some guys named Hanna, Perkins and friends. It's a great story for local climbing access. Unfortunately the road still needs lots more new pipes to stay around for the long term. I got skunked, but it's worth it. Otto Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 This new hole in the road has been marked; thanks to the road crew for making it so noticeable. If the stake disappears, drivers be warned. Quote
Otto Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 I was surprised that two alder logs lay across the Squire Creek Trail #654 all summer long. They interfered with my bike ride. So on Thursday, 9/12, I brought up my old Boy Scout hatchet. After the cut, I dragged them off the road. Sadly, a big hemlock log remains, bigger than the hatchet could handle in a day! As tall as my bike frame, it has been there for two summers. I have some nice photos of this, but I can no longer upload photos here. I'm asking about that in the "cc.com news" forum. Otto Posted September 29, 2019 Posted September 29, 2019 I figured out the local photo upload. One of the alders: The other one: The remaining big tree and the bike. This is just below the first culvert crossing. I hope someone with a big chainsaw comes up! Here's to next year, huzzah! Quote
Otto Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I went out for a bike ride and found some good person with a big saw has taken out the big fir from the Squire Creek road! Many thanks to the unknown logger. Quote
Otto Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Drove up to Darrington yesterday to check the road conditions. Clear Creek road: almost blocked by a huge tree 2.5 miles up from the pavement. There is enough room to drive under it, but someone has tried to cut the log with a large chainsaw and failed. Whether there is enough strength left in the log to keep it there while you are up climbing is left to your judgement. Squire Creek road: clear and even better than last year. You can drive past the cave-in of two years ago without even turning aside. It is just another orange ribbon on the side of the road. 1 Quote
