tpcollins Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 I'm leaning towards a polyester sheath but trying to sort out the claims from manufactures is a bit tough, so for actual users I'd like to know what works best? Some of the cordage I see at REI seems a bit stiffer than they should be. Thanks. Quote
ScaredSilly Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 For starters 7mm/8mm cord is too large of a diameter for a prusik knot. You want 5mm. As for the sheath to be honest I have never worried about it. I have always bought cord with a nylon sheath. Quote
DPS Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Agree with the above. Buy 5mm or 6mm with whatever seems to be the most supple. Some tends to be stiffer than others, so just go by feel. I used to use 6mm but had a bad habit of using them for rappel anchors. Now I use 5mm so I'm less inclined to do that unless I'm in dire straights. Quote
genepires Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 You need enough of a diameter difference between prussik and rope for ithe prussik to grab. Most people use 8 or 9mm climbing ropes so I go for 5mm prussiks. Stiff or supple, it will still grab at that thickness but the supple ones are easier to tie and wrap. Quote
layton Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 check out the sterling hollow block depending on your usage. indispensable on the harness Quote
diepj Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Concur with all of the above. I use 5mm. The stuff from REI. It seems kinda stiff as you say. I got some once from an online retailer and it felt the same. I don't care enough about it to drive all over town and feel up different cords so I just keep using the same stuff. Don't over-think it. Jeremy.0 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I never have used the stiffer cord but have been told it's a little easier to slide when not loaded and releases a bit easier after being loaded. Quote
G-spotter Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) The Dyneema tech cord can melt when used for prussik. Just use regular static cord. Edited January 6, 2017 by G-spotter Quote
