  1. 12 ga. folding stock is the best of both worlds. You can go with the pistol grip but for the folding stock can allow you to pop a few grouse if in the back country and not have to worry about wrist problems from over use. Make sure you get the gun from a shop or a gun show or from someone that you are sure has not screwed with the barrel length. If I remember my federal firearms regs the barrel has to be 18 1/2 inches long. Just call a a good gun shop or go on line to verify this rule. Stay from a rifled barrel because its meant for slugs solely. Smooth bore will allow you to shoot bird shot, BB sized shot(actually best for anti-human defense...reason more shot and it tears up the perp better), buck shot, and slugs(I'd go with sabbot slugs even in a smooth bore). The best bang for the buck is Mossberg.
  2. A great person. A tragic loss. I was and still am stunned. I've been involved in this activity for 30 years been thru this before with close friends and it never seems real at first. Just plain shock and then the sadness sets in. My heart goes out to all friends and relatives. sisu

    Climbin Resoles

Ramuta's is a fantastic place to get resoles! They have done numerous 5.10's for me, my hicking boots, my Chaco sandles. The place does the work quickly as well as good quality work.
  4. I had a student in Alaska that made her graduation dress out of duct tape. She was not the most popular person with administration but I thought she did a wonderful job both in creativity and in making a statement for all the kids who are not financially able to spend tons of money on outfits for the prom, graduation, homecoming etc.
  5. Here is a family poll: Wife= tikka Daughter= tikka son= tikka family friend= tikka another family friend= tikka sisu= BD moonlight(reason to go agains the flow in the family...I think it is a more versatile head lamp than the tikka) Do I get shit? constantly [ 09-30-2002, 10:43 AM: Message edited by: sisu suomi ]
  6. I worked for MSR many years ago so I am familar with their products Whisperlite: yes, frequent cleaning is necessary because of the "quiet" burner head. It will collect a bit of carbon over time that can cause problems. If you have any mechanical ability you can take it apart and clean all parts, reassemble it and have a perfectly running stove again. If you lack the mechanical inclination then bring it to where ever you bought it and have them sent it to MSR for a quick overhaul. Dragonfly: This stove is a better choice if you don't mind the noise. It has a "roarer" head that avoids the trapping of carbon during low output operation. By following MSR stove instructions you should have nearly trouble free operation of all their stoves. MSR has been a good company to deal with in the 30+ years that I have used their products and I hope that Cascade Designs carries on that tradition.
  7. Dave Whitelaw, Matt Perkins and and many other have worked on this area for years trying to keep it open and clean for future generations of climbers. I left this area in 1979 and returned recently with a burning desire to climb at the Darrington area. Dave was an old friend from many years ago and very nicely agreed to take me up there to visit and climb. It was a wonderful experience to hear his stories of working the routes, and drilling by hand while on lead with other friends of ours Duane Constantino, Chris Greyell, and Dave Tower. There have been many more pioneers whose names I have forgotten or just don't know, so don't be angry if I left you or your friend out of this little story. Anyway a big thanks to Dave again for taking me there that one Saturday in June. Since then I have been back a whole bunch. Lots of fun and great climbing if you enjoy that type of climbing.
  8. Office Space that is a good story. I like it. Too bad a new Vince couldn't magically show up to regroup and bring the Pack back. But alas, I think the Pack is like all the Seattle teams...they choke when the going gets tough.
  9. There is little information as to what type of power plant is proposed. What type of fuel is going to be used? Coal, oil shale or any heavy oil based products are very bad as is nuclear. But if its a natural gas plant I for one would have no problem with that as long as there are plans for heat recovery on the exhaust to further generate power via steam. All the water used in the cooling and heat generation from the exhaust is a closed cycle that have make up water added now and again. There is very little water leakage in the long run. Chemicals used to control pH, conductivity, and scale are monitored daily and if used properly don't need to be added very often once the system is on line. Power generation is not a bad word, it just has to watched by a "watch dog" group to make sure that the companies involved do the correct things when the need arises. As for "smoke" stacks over Smith if this is indeed a gas generation plant there is little material expelled into the environment, and again there are monitors controling the burning of the fuel to make sure the fuel is used to its utmost efficiency. Power generation of this type is very clean and will employ a fair number of people with training in power generation. Now as for all of you that view all power generation and progress a terrible thing. Stop and think what your negative attitude would do if applied correctly to actually help put progress to work in a healthy way. Knee jerk attitudes on both sides just results in neither side listening, so we end up with very little to zero change in the way big business operates.
  10. All right trask. Nice ram. What range were you in? Who was your guide or were you with relitives? I am assuming you are hunting in Alaska, so when you answer the range where in the range. I shot my first ram in the Caribou Creek area of the Talkeetna mountains. Stumbled into a mining operation and was held at gun point for a bit until I could explain who I was and who had given me the OK to stumble where I was. Once that was done I was treated like family. Saw more gold nuggets and dust than I ever thought I'd see in my life time. Ton of fun on that trip.

While I understood the sentiment, I'm must be too uptight: the 10 strangers spectating would have inhibited me. Dude was that you I was with. Wait a minute if you are not talking about the 70's then its not. But anyway I love to do that or, better yet, pull the wing off one side tossing the horse fly into some still water to watch a fish rise to the occasion. Sweet memories of my childhood while fishing for Eastern brookies, bows and browns.
  12. So does this report mean that skiing in and around the Cascades will be poor to worse this season?
  13. Caveman those were my ropes dude and they are skinny. Rapping you have to make sure you generate some friction. I am ready for ice season and the gear is getting out and sharpened.
  14. I am a dog owner and I believe that they should be left home unless its OK for them to be on that particular trail. I ALWAYS have my dogs on a leash. 99% of the time when running into other people's dogs they are unleashed and stupidly try to be aggressive with my dogs. I warn the people that their dog is in danger of my dog(s) and they are in danger of me if they don't come and get their precious FIDO. My dogs are expensive and I don't need vet bills. Horses were and are part of the United States culture. Personally I think they are very stupid but they serve many purposes like Erik so nicely stated. Horses and mules have there place. Maybe Rainer NP is not the place for them as they probably were not part of the historical exploration of the park but there are other NP where they were a part of the initial exploration. For my two cents I think most of the citizenry of the Greater Seattle Metro area are a bunch of fucking whiners that can't deal with life on life's own terms. Quit your fucking crying and scrape the shit off your shoe and take another step. If that does not please you stay inside and order out.
  15. Thanks for the support.
  16. Is there any snow left on the approach to Ingalls east ridge on the north peak?
  17. I was listening to NPR story about this race. There was according to the NPR newsperson quite a flap in France that Lance was too dominating. Now, how can one be too dominating in a race to win?
  18. DEAR TP, . There has been activity in Oregon involving young girls disappearing, so maybe, just maybe by posting this and having you read it and share it with someone you know who has female children or share it with an adult female you may save a life.(you are from oregon according to the profile)What is wrong with this site? Huh? Is spray just limited to climbing, I don't think so? YES, this is appropriate as far as I am conderned. Besides are you the SPRAY POLICE?
  19. I know this is long, but read it and share it with someone. I used to teach math, and because of all the federal regulations for drug classes, sexual harassment, sex/HIV/AIDS education, and personal safety classes. I took an interest in the drug and personal education classes as my point of interest for the kids. Please read on and share. By the way this is not a joke. Last night I attended a personal safety workshop, and it jolted me. It was given by an amazing man, Pat Malone, who has been a body guard for famous figures like Farrah Fawcett and Sylvester Stallone. He works for the FBI and teaches police officers and Navy SEALS hand-to-hand combat. This man has seen it all, and knows a lot. He focused his teachings to us on HOW TO AVOID BEING THE VICTIM OF A VIOLENT CRIME. He gave us some statistics about how much the occurrences of random violence have escalated over the recent years, and it's terrible. Something like 99% of us will be exposed to, or become a victim of a violent crime. Here are some of the most important points that I got out of his presentation: (1.) The three reasons women are easy targets for random acts of violence are: (a.) Lack of Awareness You MUST know where you are & what's going on around you. (b.) Body Language Keep your head up, swing your arms, stand straight up. (c.) Wrong Place, Wrong Time DON'T walk alone in an alley, or drive in a bad neighborhood at night. (2.) Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc). DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE! (a.) A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. (b.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. (c.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.) 3.) ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot). 4.) If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! (a.)The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN! 5.) As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. (a.) Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim. (b.) Pat Malone told us the story of his daughter, who came out of the mall and was walking to her car when she noticed 2 older ladies in front of her. Then she saw a police car come towards her with cops who said hello. She also noticed that all 8 handicap spots in the area were empty. (SHE WAS AWARE OF HER SURROUNDINGS!!) As she neared her car she saw a man a fewrows over calling to her for help. He wanted her to close his passenger side door. He was sitting in the back on the driver's side, and said he washandicapped. He continued calling, until she turned and headed back to the mall, and then he began cursing at her. In the meantime, she wondered why he didn't ask the 2 older ladies, or the policeman for help, and why he was not parked in any of the empty handicap spots. As she got back to the mall, two male friends of hers were exiting, and as she told them the story, and turned to point at the car, the man was getting out of the back seat into the front and the car sped away. DON'T GET CAUGHT IN THIS TRAP. I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was going to send this to the ladies only; but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it on to them, as well. Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it....better safe than sorry. PLEASE BE SAFE AND NOT SORRY! JUST A WARNING TO ALWAYS BE ALERT AND USE YOUR HEAD!!! Pass this along to every woman you have access to. Never let your guard down.

    trail clearing

I'm afraid that thru my ramblings the subject of trail clearing has slipped away. Dennis mentioned motor head and their interestes. You know what. Hikers, climbers, motor heads, mountain bikers, fishermen(I refuse to PC about an old term applied to both sexes), hunters(all types of hunting) and anyone I have missed that uses the out of doors, all these groups need to unite to tell the feds, state and local government that they want areas open and usuable for themselves. Some of these groups can coexist with each other, but fighting amoung themselves as to who has a better use of what is senseless. An anology if you will. During the 1700's thru the early 1900's the in fighting amoung the American Indian allowed the European settler to take control of their land, their religion of choice, ways of dress, language etc. When I think of out door users and all the in fighting I always think of this and how fortunate the afore mentioned government groups are that "we" have not figuered out how to impact the powers to be. I don't care to be involved in motor head sports, pure mountain biking for biking sake either Dennis, but to show the govenment we are serious you sometimes have to sleep with strange bed fellows to get what you want.

    trail clearing

Poseur, being a good old American boy I like BIG BORE guns. In fact my moose gun was a .338 belted round, but if you really wanted to know what I would like hahahah .50 cal, recoilless, with a starlite scope shooting 2 inches high at 1000 metres. No night vision for me just a starlight. I suggested chain saw many moons ago AK. I know you have a job and all so you cannot be expected to up to speed on this as well as us lay abouts that live on the dole [ 07-22-2002, 09:14 PM: Message edited by: sisu suomi ]

    trail clearing

If I said what piece I liked my wife would hit me. This has been a good thread. What I want is good trails where they have been.I'm not asking for trail systems into the heart of the North Cascades, that's what helicopters are for. hahaha. I have horse backed in, bicycled in, fixed wing and rotored into places as well as walked, skiied, snowshoed and used every sort of water transportation you can think of to get to places I have wanted to go. Why have I done this? TO HAVE FUN AND ENJOY MYSELF. Anyway I have had fun with this thread I'll be back in a few days. I'm off to use our National Treasures before Allison comes up with some new "legal spegle" that says I have to do something special to use the backcountry.
  24. There was a thread abut this some weeks ago. Do a search and you will find out all the information. It was offical from the NFS and I do believe it was from their offical spokesperson.
