get a room, you two. All this flirting is giving me funny feelings.
  4. Olestra is Twight's secret ingredient to alpine badassness. The whole Gu thing is a front. He travels with a flask of whisky and a Camelback of Olestra.
  5. I'd rather be razzed for being stupid than have my ass rescued/carted out of somewhere it didn't belong. I don't think it's good enough to suppose that 'the party involved knows it' - at some point the interests of the community outweigh the interests of someone's tender egos. They should feel stupid for not knowing what was involved on the descent. Coming back down is just as important as getting up the climb, and I'm perfectly content to roast someone to make that point to other beginning climbers. I'm glad they had a good time, I'm glad they're safe, but their problems began long before they decided (or failed to decide) to wear sandals. ymmv
  6. Umm. Yeah. The vision is pretty bad, but it was the smell that really bothers me.
  7. AlpineK said this in another thread Learning how to pick your traveling companions is key. Just as key is learning how to be a good companion- for me this means learning how to have fun and laugh at shit when you're cold/tired/scared/hurting. Everybody has their own way of dealing w/shit- find someone who works well with you under pressure.
  8. ?? Where's the chest-beating? Haven't you learned anything on cc.com?

  10. How did you know? (btw, what is your argument?)
  11. Oh yeah. You've got to eat a lot too. Alpine climbers are fat- richly padded with extra insulation & food. Learn to drink olive oil like it was a fine wine.
  12. Go camping. There are many skills you learn from simply backpacking on multiday trip that will serve you very well in the alpine- how to pack a pack, how to pack lightly, how to dress when active & at rest, how to stay warm, how to not get lost, yadda yadda. This skills strike some people as so fundamental that they're surprised not everyone knows this stuff, but you'll be miserable without it.
  13. No, I'm not posturing as some expert in atmospheric sciences- which means I'm not pretending to know more than these folks. They definitely acknowledge that "Climate change decision making is essentially a sequential process under general uncertainty." As you argue, we don't (and won't) have the complete picture- there will always be some blank spots on the knowledge map. Enough knowledge is there to begin to get the general idea. To be crippled into inaction by this uncertainty is foolish- unless you profit from this inaction. If you refuse you read the report in the link, let me summarize some key points: "The earth's climate system has demonstrably changed on both global and regional scales since the pre-industrial era, with some of these changes attributable to human activities." "Human activities have increased the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases and aerosols since the pre-industrial era." "There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities." What in this picture is unclear, Bushwhacker? Shall we take no action until we know exactly what percentage is attributable to human activity? What salient data are you wainting for?
  14. IPCC I think BushWhacker would like to be handheld on an elaborate proof starting from number theory and ending in atmospheric sciences (with brief detours into epistomology and ontology thrown in) which clearly shows human impact on global warming. He'd like it in 30 minutes or less please. During commercials. edited to fix goofy link
  15. great! What color is your bike?
  16. Wow. Cool link. I didn't know that GregW was a 'certified attitude adjuster.' He also has a 'PhD in Whoop-Ass.'

OW- That's the new statewide system. Sam Reed (secretary of state, the guy to blame for this fiasco) fondles hc. View the voting guidelines.
  21. How about the statement "I can tell you that second hand smoke is not a health hazard to anyone and never was, and the EPA has always known it." The FDA is responsible for the second-hand smoke warnings, and classifies second-hand smoke as a Class A carcinogen (known to cause cancer in humans).
