  1. The Wind Rivers don't melt that much faster, necessarily. I was there July 4th weekend, and it was postholing hell. Get a copy of the Bonney guide to Wyoming's Mountains (older), Ortenburger guide to the TETONS, or the Kelsey wind river guide. There's some online info for the Tetons, but the winds don't see that much traffic (outside cirque of the towers)

    Ronald Reagan

I guess I was unclear. The competitive disadvantage is having to support 2 measurement systems: metric, what you need if you want to sell any product outside of the US, and English, which only Americans care about.

Loading American businesses with a competitive disadvantage on the world market?

  7. And so we should reflect on the full measure of the man - good, and bad.
  8. I'm looking for a partner for a slog/ski or other such fun (Eldorado? Challenger in 3? Something like that) For all or part of next weekend (June 11, 12 & 13th) I'll be in Seattle for work on Thurs, leaving after that. PM me! Current weather forecast is awesome (trip is now officially jinxed!)
  9. It changes the leadership of the CIA. The one that under Tenet: a)Mistook Sudan Medical Factory for Chemical Weapons Plant b)Missed 9/11 c)Thought WMD's were a "slam dunk" Public chastizing's are BS
  10. The bushies are loathe to admit they were wrong. About anything. Tenet resigning for "personal" reasons allows you to replace him and "fix" the problem wihtout ever admitting there was one.

I like the lead up to the Franco-Prussian war, when all of Europe thought the militaristic French would crush the Pansy Germans Manchester's Churchill Biography series is also good.

  15. They start shooting the game. Like Zimbabwe & the Sudan. I'm not sure Americans are the only culture that likes familiar icons - look at the British. There's a pub in every town the world over it seems, and half the people there are from the UK.
  16. Most of the "cultures" that are being discussed here were subsistence - the essence was/is putting food in their belly. It's the emergence into a higher standard of living - access to good quality medicine, good travel infrastructure, places to eat out that people seem to object to.
  17. The sound of the shell being chambered on a pump shotgun crosses all language barriers.
  18. Your correct on the fear part Greg, you just misplace the source. I'm not afraid of the world being a violent nasty place - it is. I've just found myself to be more afraid of many owners of concealed weapons - like the woman I worked with who couldn't drive a stick (too difficult) but felt her pistol would protect her, even though she practiced barely once a month. I've met others like her. Add to this greater gun ownership increasing the potential deadliness of any conflict, and I've come out against them.
  19. I think I have next years summer vacation...
  20. Deadly hot isn't an understatement
  21. Isn't it kinda hard to go "trekking" on Baffin? Unless you like slogging on ice in the cold?
  22. For the fish, the guns, or ????
