    Weather

Anyone have recomendations for weather forecasting/science books, courses, etc? esp Mountain weather? (beyond the mountainsteers publication)
  2. I was thinking of practices that would correct, or cause you to notice, errors when you aren't 100% vigilant..
  3. Is that bear screwing a big green hold? No, it's hiding from the green elves asking "Are you an REI member? Would you like to become one?!"
  4. More important than 'skills' is attention to detail and developing a consistant, error correcting, method for performing critical tasks. Gyms don't teach that, neither do clubs, that's a personal trait... that society is not reinforcing. And PP is correct - there are a great many 'good' climbers who've been hurt, injured or died in rap accidents.
  5. They don't know dick about Chouinard gear when I've asked about getting pieces repaired - many/most of the people who were around then have moved on. Here's the relevant page for the 1972 catalog, does that correspond to the #4 you found?

    Net Neutrality?

Would you disagree that universal telephone service has been a substantial net economic benefit as well as saved the lives of thousands (one need only look to 911). If electricity's necessary (sorry dude, you don't 'need' heat ) so is net access.

If I understand the telcos plan, it would cost you, I, and dru $.10, some <1000 post sprayer, $.05 and some n00b $.00 to post in spray.

That's not the history I've read, but it makes sense the Turks would say that......
  16. I'm curious to see how the % spent at b&m stores varies with location. When I lived in PDX I spent more at stores because they actually carried climbing gear. I think the closest full service climbing shop to me now is 250 miles away in Bishop.

With the highest casualities of any serving nation, out of a population of some 5 million people 331,000 served overseas of whom 215,000 were captured, missing, killed or injured is that suprising? The Australia War Memorial is a sobering sight in Canberra.

...of course, there's more to the story - like sending an unescourted liner into waters where Germany had promised to do just this very thing. I'm not a big proponent of active conspiracies, but Wilson (and the Brits) had to know the outcome beforehand.... Among other things the Germans trying to get Mexico to go to war with us didn't help (Zimmerman telegram). Actual, factual evidence of another nation meaning to do us harm. My GreatGrandfather volunteered as a medical officer; first he was detailed to a camp somewhere in the US South where he wrote notes in triplicate (!) instructing soldiers not to defecate while standing on the latrine seat, among other fine things, then he was shipped to Europe where he contracted the flu on the boat over, almost died in a hospital, then returned home. His maxim thereafter was "never trust the government"

There's still some areas of the Adirondaks that are as 'wilderness' as anything in the west. Wilderness is going, going, gone. Some areas are as girdletraversed as could be though....

oh goody another semantical argument about voluntary Sorry JayB, there are quite a few countries where people believe in the soical contract so there contribution to government is voluntary. There are others where people feel corporations are extorting them and their contributions are involuntary Who's the semantic quibbler here? The guy punching the clock at the GM plant is in the same boat as the guy marching in the parade in N. Korea? That wasn't what I was saying ms. coulter
