With the highest casualities of any serving nation, out of a population of some 5 million people 331,000 served overseas of whom 215,000 were captured, missing, killed or injured is that suprising? The Australia War Memorial is a sobering sight in Canberra.

...of course, there's more to the story - like sending an unescourted liner into waters where Germany had promised to do just this very thing. I'm not a big proponent of active conspiracies, but Wilson (and the Brits) had to know the outcome beforehand.... Among other things the Germans trying to get Mexico to go to war with us didn't help (Zimmerman telegram). Actual, factual evidence of another nation meaning to do us harm. My GreatGrandfather volunteered as a medical officer; first he was detailed to a camp somewhere in the US South where he wrote notes in triplicate (!) instructing soldiers not to defecate while standing on the latrine seat, among other fine things, then he was shipped to Europe where he contracted the flu on the boat over, almost died in a hospital, then returned home. His maxim thereafter was "never trust the government"

There's still some areas of the Adirondaks that are as 'wilderness' as anything in the west. Wilderness is going, going, gone. Some areas are as girdletraversed as could be though....

    Damn Capitalist!

oh goody another semantical argument about voluntary Sorry JayB, there are quite a few countries where people believe in the soical contract so there contribution to government is voluntary. There are others where people feel corporations are extorting them and their contributions are involuntary Who's the semantic quibbler here? The guy punching the clock at the GM plant is in the same boat as the guy marching in the parade in N. Korea? That wasn't what I was saying ms. coulter

    Damn Capitalist!

if you consider bribes 'private justice' yes.. but thats the problem. If you can get a large group of people to cooperate for the good of each other, that's government. Call it whatever name that makes you and your ideology happy, it doesn't change the nature of the beast.

  12. If you are going to Nepal read HW Tilman : The Nepal Himalayas. It's in the Mountaineers compondium. Good stuff.
  13. I'm not sure how many actual photo radar units there are relative to 'photo radar' zone signs in Oz or NZ.. based on recent experience it's pretty low. Or at least I never got a ticket for graituitous speeds. The toll for entering Melbourne via the Highways is enforced effectively via camera... so pay up or the rental car company will charge your creditcard 5 months later

    Damn Capitalist!

Both he and the richest man (Gates) have been outspoken advocates for the estate tax for quite a few years. Perhaps you've missed that amongst the Republican renaming spin?
  18. lanes are assigned to various groups (eg race camps, mogul camps, freestyle/park camps) who use timberline in the summertime for their exclusive use - those features in the picture are above the top of the lift? that's snow farming - the lane is downslope. the public lane is immediate skiiers left of the chair; their's usually a whiteboard at the palmer exit giving the key to who has what lane/lanes

    Bomb North Korea?

    Bomb North Korea?

No Fairweather, I've actually dealth with the current MD programs They are a joke. A fully functional missile defense program is a chimera; a fantasy born of a senile brain. A chance to squander 10's of billions, perhaps 100's of billions. In cased you missed it the greatest threat to the US is no longer states but nonstates - who've shown them quite capable of transcending national boundaries.

    Bomb North Korea?

Are you suggesting that the current system under development is reliable?Or that it would be difficult to defeat?
