I like torturing new climbers by spending whole days climbing chimneys and offwidths. The more you bleed the more fun I'm having. On a more serious note (not that there isn't some truth to what I said above) When I first started climbing on my own I was climbing with a friend who was also a total rookie. We made mistakes, but we both had a good time. Now that I have more experience I enjoy occasionally climbing with newbies, but I would loose it if I went on the road for three months with any male or female who expected me to lead everything and pay most of the bills. I belayed some big logs out of a tree today. Dynamic thats what its all about. Get some leather gloves and let the rope run, so you don't shake the tree too much and scare the climber. Oh wait we're talking rock climbing

I'm not sure which post on glacier travel to respond to; so I'll respond to this one. I've been unroped on a bunch of glaciers. I've skied on quite a number and I've never roped up while skiing. Skiing on glaciers in the early spring seems safe to me. Big snow pack covers most crevases, and you can avoid the ones it doesn't. Also skiing with a rope really really sucks, or at least it must since I've never done it. As far as climbing unroped on a glacier. I've made judgement calls. After climbing on big glaciers in Alaska and glaciers in the Canadian Rockies, I'm not so worried about glaciers in the cascades. However I would not encourage anyone to do this, and I think you should have a lot of experience on glaciers in the area you are climbing in before you do anything rash.

Living in Boulder sure made me sick of bikers. Herds of em out on two lane roads riding two abreast in their skin tight, wild lycra tights. And when I would try and pass them in my work truck they would all flip me off.

I read an article in the Atlantic (I think) about a year ago about drilling and drilling technology. Most peoples notion of an oil derrick drilling an oil patch straight under it is way outdated. They can drill sideways for miles too. So I believe Cheney and his lacky George W when they talk about how light an impact drilling and exploring might have. However I think that misses the main point. The main point is that we are fucking outselves (both environmentally and in terms of national security) by basing our economy on burning fossil fuels. Instead of incouraging more drilling. It would be nice to see the governmet pumping a lot of money into wind/hydrogen/fuel cell technology. But I'm afraid our leaders are owned by Enron and Texaco and the like, so I guess we'll keep drilling.

I think you missed my point dwayner. Just cause we can drill doesn't mean we should. Also just because we can drill with less damage doesn't mean pipelines and tankers are any safer. The way I see it we should just keep using all the oil we've already been drilling and instead of subsidizing new oil drilling and trying to build some Star Wars crap, we should be pumping all that money into new energy technology. George and his buddies may be paying lip service to fuel cells ect, but I don't see him putting very much of his money where his mouth is. It's pretty well documented that the space race and all the government money that went with it was one of the main factors in the high tech boom. Believe me I know a thing or two about burning fossile fuels, but given a reasonable alternative I would jump at the chance to buy a new fleet of eco chain saws ect. I've already switched from traditional bar oil to a vegetable based substitute. Other than that the only power I can weild is my vote and my ability to bitch. Anyway lets not turn this into another year of the mountain long winded debate. I would much rather talk about what a morron George W is and what a bunch of loadies his daughters are. Come on Fairweather you must be able to admit George isn't the sharpest pencil in the pack and it's pretty funny that such an antidrug guy could have such fuck ups for kids.

Well for one thing I think the slopes leading up to the east face of Liberty Bell to be very dangerous unless the snow pack was very stable. you would have to take snow shoes on the route for the descent. Rock climbing in Cali sounds a lot more fun.

I wanna hear what Fairweather has to say about George W's, "Axis of Evil." I mean what the fuck is up with that. I think its embarrassing to have a president who comes out with that kind of crap. I have way more respect for one that chases white house interns.

If you have downhill gear and you have to walk on a dangerous mountain road I think hitchin would be a smart thing. But whatever I still think you are being an elitist prick to decide whether or not to give someone a ride based on what kind of gear they own.

I think it's funny the way people like spody brody think that CC is suppose to be so serious. A lot of people have managed to do a lot of climbing without any help from the internet. What is it you want Spody? would you like someone to hold your hand up every route you plan on climbing? Where is your sense of adventure? Some information is great, but if you know every move of a climb before you climb it then why bother? You could just watch videos of climbers.
