  1. mt st helens requires 'permits' this time of year to go up. or you could always just go anyways. the permit system is bullshit, for reference. southside/south spur for adams, yes. though a route that was new to me 'winter variation' is where the boot-pack is going--basically you get to treeline and veer to the east, going up west of south butte (look on a topo) and east of the crescent glacier (not west like normal), due to big cornices along the ridge you normally gain below the crescent glacier. parking is a clusterfuck about 2-snowfree miles from the normal trailhead, due to a few persistent snowbanks. saw both climbing rangers at the summit and at lunch counter (flat area below the false summit) and they did not ask about the permit or anything (i had not put mine on my pack either) so i'd personally skip it... otherwise its $10 weekday/$15 weekend. but unlike st helens, no limit and not paying $7 service fee to a hosting website. mt hood: ski the southside probably.. road to cloud cap is probably not open = ~4 miles of snow-free trail carrying skis down to cooper spur snowpark. also consider the drive to south sister for more vertical than st helens.
  2. ...fell off the face of mount thor in nunavut. or was sitting in a pile when i was moved the car after a drive-way oil change. Personally I'm a lot happier with the mount thor story.
  3. thanks for the 2cents here is how it turned out. I could throw one more rivet down by the crack, I suppose. It seems solid enough, not sure how much flex that rear outside corner gets--if it was a break by the inside forefoot, maybe a bolt would have been better. I spose if the rivets break out i can replace them with bolts.

    snowshoes?

was up there last weekend. going up after a clear night it was firm and fine. going down after it had rained significantly below 9k, the lower we went the more postholing there was, and we were coming down from muir at 7am or something. my take is that if moving in the early hours it will be fine, as the forecast is awesome i think it will chill nicely and firm up each night.
  5. got these back in the late 90s on a flight outta ANC
  6. quite cheap too!
  7. pretty cool! Always a fan of any TR of the sisters-beautiful the way the weather broke for you that night. Though as I read I wondered if it was a bit of a joke, I mean once you woke up didn't you see three mountains to the west? Though if it had been 5 years and you were groggy and don't know the area well at all I could see.. though after this refresher I doubt you'll ever confuse any of the sisters! cheers! So originally you were shooting for going up one of the chutes below the traverse on North? ballsy!
  8. awesome pics! looks like a great trip--is one of those last shots from the summit? spent a nice weekend back in may camped high on the flat triangle-shaped flank of the SE ridge. nice view of the thayer moraine and tarn.. love the area, so few folks, generally speaking!
  9. btw timberline has recorded 8 inches of snow in the last 24hrs, 10inches in the last 72hrs: http://www.nwac.us/weatherdata/timberlinebase/now/ current conditions: http://www.timberlinelodge.com/conditions/ side note: when is goddamn summer going to start
  10. based on looking at the weather it seems starting friday, it will be nice through monday.
  11. i cut/pasted the additional savings aspect from someone's SteepandCheap forum post to relay the deal. please excuse me, and fuck off
  12. Add it to your cart and the price drops to 87.93. Seems to be unannounced (at the moment at least) 20% off 1 item in the outlet, plus free shipping if you're a member. Seems like a pretty sweet deal.
  13. yes, to clarify the point click is a way to get a discussion for an area. ie: the point click for Mt Hood is a bit different than the one for near Baker. hood area: .LONG TERM..THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WILL LINGER INTO SUNDAY MORNING AND BEGIN TO SHIFT EAST ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. ANOTHER DAY OF SUNNY WEATHER AND WARMER TEMPS IS ON TAP...EXCEPT LATER IN THE DAY NEAR THE COAST. MODELS HAVE SPED UP THE MARINE PUSH ON SUNDAY...WHICH MAY KEEP HIGHS ON SUNDAY DOWN A BIT FROM SATURDAY. AS THE UPPER RIDGE AXIS CONTINUES ON EAST...ENHANCED ONSHORE FLOW SHOULD BRING SOME COASTAL LOW CLOUDS BY MONDAY. Yes the Point-click specifically for an elevation on some peak is interpolated from the predicted and present data from the nearest weather station, I believe. It is not terribly accurate for instance getting the forecast for 10,000ft on Mt Adams, at all, but at the same time can offer some general ideas, though the forecast discussion is where the meat of 'whats up' is.
  14. NOAA Point-Click Forecast Use the map to click the area you want. Then scroll down to Forecast Discussion You will find this information much more valuable overall than weather sites like weather.com or accuweather 10-day forecasts, imo.
  15. this boot does not fit me and is not in my size but i'd like to chime that i did try these on in a few stores and they are an awesome boot, whether the apex rock, trek, or XT, all great with eVent membrane and solid construction.
  16. if you think it works my main understanding of such a tool for walk-up is other than risk of appearing too tool-like, the shaft is too short on a moderate slope to do a good self belay, and too curved/finger grip can make plunging it more difficult, the pick angle is not ideal for self arrest. but if you find it works for you, it works for you.
  17. whats preferred? all IDs apparently in an asian script? all ids in logogram format? it would be a lot easier if there was just a single 'asian' lx, wouldn't it? yeah i told my co-worker, whew, i would hate to go for it at rocky butte, no confidence you would be successful there, much better cliffs/spots than that.
  18. from multnomah police scanner: apparent suicide at rocky butte body found in business attire, all IDs in asian, except for American Express.
  19. solo with a rope on the south side would be entertaining to watch
  20. colorado summer 14ners are all "thousands of feet" higher than hood. higher altitude than hood counts for little though, if its just rocky scrambles under the sun. if you have no crampon and ice ax experience.. don't do it alone. if you are competent with crampons and self arrest, proper footwear for crampons, clothing/navigating 'winter' conditions (what its been lately), then probably fine.
  21. yeah if you are looking to go up hood on the 4th.... whew wee please report back. standard route will probably be plenty of action and all solitary, unless some other fools are around. noaa point click interpolated telemetry @ 9,000ft: 6/3 Tonight: Snow. Low around 36. South southwest wind between 7 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible. 6/4 Friday: Snow level 9000 feet lowering to 7000 feet. Snow showers. Windy, with a west southwest wind 13 to 16 mph increasing to between 29 and 32 mph. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  22. Contrary to common law, eight states have laws requiring people to help strangers in peril: Florida,[10] Massachusetts,[11] Minnesota,[11] Ohio,[statute verification needed] Rhode Island,[11] Vermont,[11] Washington,[11] and Wisconsin.[statute verification needed] These laws are also referred to as Good Samaritan laws, despite their difference from laws of the same name that protect individuals that try to help another person.[1] These laws are rarely applied, and are generally ignored by citizens and lawmakers.[1] wiki Duty to rescue
  23. no? good samaritan laws -- aren't they to hold observers of crime/injury/death to some degree of responsibility and protect those who come to aid from some degree of litigation when they are attempting to offer aid when there are no other options/first on the scene/observed it happen. maybe no such laws in cali
  24. broughton and rocky cigbutte are starters
  25. flying down saturday morning to LA it was clear from crater lake onward. Got some fun shots of shasta from 35k ft. ok, Im not a person who'd thrive in LA, but damn that was some fine fine sun, bluesky, and perfect ocean breezes. would have liked to stay more than a day with the nonbreaking tripe weather we've had up here.
