BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians. Jesus never smoked pot; M'kay? If Jesus never did it we are against it. M'kay?

'now there you go again', Ronald Regan, movie actor and former president. No need for the mob to pay boot licking service to the white house, we do house calls. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons /9/9a/Mutassim_Gadaffi_Hilary_Clinton.jpg He looks a little tiny bit arrogant and she looks just a little bit uncomfortable , like, 'aah tell me why am I here?'

Why would a complete loser return to Haiti when Libya and Colonel Gaddafi is just a stones throw away. Wikipedia:Following the attacks of 11 September, Gaddafi made one of the first, and firmest, denunciations of the Al-Qaeda bombers by any Muslim leader. Gaddafi also appeared on ABC for an open interview with George Stephanopoulos, a move that would have seemed unthinkable less than a decade earlier. Maybe the Haitians have the same amount of memory loss as the Americans.

It's funny how society places value on things it can't eat, drink, burn or load.

Hey, thanks for elevating this thread to new heights, keep up the good work.

So here is my sci-fi blend of philosophy, psychology and psychiatry look at EGO. The poor fellow that lost his nut in Arizona took some loved people down with him. Why, because his ego. His ego could no longer control his world around him for whatever reason, maybe due to the 'voices' he heard. His ego, the feeling of having no control, handing the control over to 'voices' lead him to kill. So why does he hear voices? He hears voices because he knows something they don't. The so-called paranoia is really a megalomania in disguise. The megalomania (ego) builds him into something he had failed at in life: being important. Being someone with important information gives him a sense of control. Control of information that only he has. One thing about insanity is that the people that are insane, don't know they are. Ego is just the desire to control: physical bodies, environment, minds, feelings, actions, other peoples opinions, lives, health, beauty, wealth, nations. At one time ego kept us alive; we had to be in control to stay alive. It wasn't in or out of control, it was just plain control. Currently we have now mastered how to control some of the nasty inconveniences of the past. Like hunger and thirst. But the hard wiring hasn't changed. The ego is always eager to control something perceived as a new threat. Even if the perception is insane, it appears as the only sane thing left to do. Anyway it's just one angle. Ego, control, free from having to forcibly control, hard wiring, still killing.

One of the more thought provoking threads I have read and kudos for the tone from both sides. Now the question: what is a 55 year old single unemployed infirmed guy going to do? Back to Ego spray.

If or when the U.S. were to recover, what would happen if we told the ChiCom's to fuck off when they requested to be paid? Hey thanks for the loot. According to our forefather President Jefferson we should stiff them. It's all funny papers anyway. No inherent value like food, water, heat. Remember when German money became worthless. Think inflation is low. Don't think it can happen again. The biggest decrease in car pollution was when the economy went into recession. Long live the recession.

Yep, just finished MT 'letters from the earth'; it didn't cure me of Einsteins god, just the Christian one.

not sure who your reply was directed at. if at me...i'm not necessarily suggesting anything. just read those lines and they kinda worked their way in and i vibed with them. also reminded me of times that i've gotten pissed at people for something that I have a habit of doing. actually quite amazing, the process, when i step back. anger seems to be a good cue for this kinda thing.... Good stuff bud. Anger is just vomit from something you decided to eat.

Thanks, this made me laugh. Mark Twain said something like there is no reason to live past 55; I'm beginning to believe it. I'm way too serious anymore, comedy and drugs don't work much, climbing seems too narcissistic, and sex seems to be too much hassle, even with myself. I guess I should try volunteering next; although, I have been told they don't need more bodies, just more money.

Isn't your business insurance busting your balls yet or is that what your talking about?

Worrying and spray are the things I do best with my time BC; dog knows I don't spend it laboring. Spray keeps me out of trouble when I can't climb due to infirmity. Besides, I'm too bourgeoisie in spirit to work all the time anymore. Clinton getting tough with China because they won't devalue the US dollar. I think it's just smoke. I know I'm repeating myself but they hold too many of our dollars to devalue them. Don't think any US financial institution would do it given the same situation. China just has the drop on us as far as capitalism and this upsets some people. The commies are beating us at our own game with a little help from their freedom loving corporate friends. Some of the commie proletariats are even complaining of the inequalities of capitalism, but we never really here much about it. Yawn. Scratch. Sniff. Belch. Far..

they also existed in a state of essentially continous warfare w/ their neighbors thank you, never thought the hunter-gatherer life was very desirable; however, consistently working (labor) 3 hours/day seems to be a good number for me as far as productivity quotas. Although there are some studies that claim old duffers productivity doesn't go down with age; not sure what there doing. As far as essentially continuous warfare it seems we're pretty good at that as a country; but United in it?

It's probably true, no doubt why no ones talking about it.

man larry, i don't THINK pink was trying to call you out! it would be nice to hear what the man has to say to your post though, old boy. i know a # of older folks who've been unable to get a job anywhere after months and years of looking... Shirley you jest joker. I have the card but probably won't re-up. I'm not touching the eight kids thing. I won't include video games because I stink at them. As far as hard working, talking about labor here, most of that is subsistence wages; so I hope you at least enjoy it. Supposedly hunter-gathers only worked 3 hours per day and did the wild thing a lot. I am interested in the statistical breakdown of the under and unemployed people by age though--anyone got it.

I looked into getting health insurance and was denied due to history of low back problems. If they hadn't denied me the bill would be over $500/month. I applied to the state health care plan and was denied because I have over 2k in savings. A friend told me to just reapply and lie on the application because an inside state source told him they never check up on the accuracy of applications. I'm unemployed, 55, and living off my savings; about a years wages. I don't see many people my age getting hired lately, but I personally haven't even tried. For example: a friend my age applied at a big box distribution center that just opened here recently. They posted a picture of all the new hires. He said all the new hires looked to be really young. I just can't bring myself to scam health care. I want to apply some logic into my thinking to justify scamming it but I can't come up with any ethical reason--I guess I will go broke first. Supposedly there are a lot of people only a months savings away from being broke. Most of the 6 billion people do not have health insurance; some people say what does that have to do it. Recent reported profits are bigger than ever in the financial sector but not in others. This is pretty interesting considering the USA is broke. I'm guessing the financial sector CEO's must have some really big tax loopholes. Wikipedia: Among these organizations are banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds and some government sponsored enterprises. As of 2004, the financial services industry represented 20% of the market capitalization of the S&P 500 in the United States.[1] I can't say I know much about the financial sector other than they seem to be good at scamming. They have big brains and make money off those they can scam it off of; fair enough I guess. The health industry seems to be just that, an industry. They have CEO's that could give a fart about health. Personally I have experienced good and bad medicine being practiced over the years; maybe you can relate. The industry places quotas on doctors which appears to me to be a direct conflict of interest. wikipedia Society A society or a human society is (1) a group of people related to each other through persistent relations such as social status, roles and social networks. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals sharing a distinctive culture and institutions.

In the vertical setup like the picture, all of the forces on the bolts go directly down (what you want). The further apart you have the bolts the V shape increases/ gets wider and so do the >inward< forces on those bolts. Inward forces on 2 opposing bolts is not ideal, or good, as it puts more load on each bolt the wider the angle gets. straight down is good. If you were to pick up a large 100lb stone by keeping your upper body in vertical alignment and squatting the task would be as easy as it gets. Then think of how much of that 100lbs you would feel if you leaned foward ever so slightly while picking it up. Is that a shitty analogy or what? Great example. I just applied it, accidentally, while reaching to pick up a small package. The results being my trick back went out again. D'oh.

I'm so disappointed K-bone, they have pills for that you know.

But they didn't do "nothing". Art, dance, chants, special celebrations... making war - all outside of the basics of survival. And none of these are "doing nothing". Agreed; however, if you framed it in a western psyche they are doing nothing--child's play, no intrinsic value, unless it's war. Art, dance, chants, special celebrations...fun stuff. Statistically I wonder how much time per citizen is actually spent doing these things. I'm guessing more time and money is spent in the spectator sports industry.

Thanks for the article. In the interest of safety and education: In the photo of the anchor with chains it appears that the anchor bolts are placed in a vertical alignment, not horizontal. Is one orientation safer than the other? If so, why? Any articles on this already out there? Please post link if available. Thank you.

Source Wikipedia Edited by me Sustainability Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” At the 2005 World Summit it was noted that this requires the reconciliation of environmental, social and economic demands - the "three pillars" of sustainability For many environmentalists the idea of sustainable development is an oxymoron as development seems to entail environmental degradation The Earth Charter[19] speaks of “a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.” It has also been described as a "dialogue of values that defies consensual definition".[24] Population Emerging economies like those of China and India aspire to the living standards of the Western world as does the non-industrialized world in general.[48] It is the combination of population increase in the developing world and unsustainable consumption levels in the developed world that poses a stark challenge to sustainability.[49] Carrying capacity More and more data are indicating that humans are not living within the carrying capacity of the planet. The resulting ecological deficit must be met from unsustainable extra sources and these are obtained in three ways: embedded in the goods and services of world trade; taken from the past (e.g. fossil fuels); or borrowed from the future as unsustainable resource usage (e.g. by over exploiting forests and fisheries). The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The assessment measures 24 ecosystem services concluding that only four have shown improvement over the last 50 years, 15 are in serious decline, and five are in a precarious condition.[55] Environmental dimension Herman Daly has suggested three broad criteria for ecological sustainability: renewable resources should provide a sustainable yield (the rate of harvest should not exceed the rate of regeneration); for non-renewable resources there should be equivalent development of renewable substitutes; waste generation should not exceed the assimilative capacity of the environment.[56] Management of human consumption Energy developing less carbon-hungry technology and transport systems and attempts by individuals to lead carbon neutral lifestyles by monitoring the fossil fuel use embodied in all the goods and services they use.[79] Water Water security and food security are inextricably linked.Currently towards 35% of human water use is unsustainable, drawing on diminishing aquifers and reducing the flows of major rivers: this percentage is likely to increase if climate change impacts become more severe, populations increase, aquifers become progressively depleted and supplies become polluted and unsanitary Food The environmental effects of different dietary patterns depend on many factors, including the proportion of animal and plant foods consumed and the method of food production. ...World Health Assembly. It recommends the Mediterranean diet which is associated with health and longevity and is low in meat, rich in fruits and vegetables, low in added sugar and limited salt, and low in saturated fatty acids; the traditional source of fat in the Mediterranean is olive oil, rich in monounsaturated fat Materials, toxic substances, waste Synthetic chemical production has escalated following the stimulus it received during the second World War. Chemical production includes everything from herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers to domestic chemicals and hazardous substances. Apart from the build-up of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, chemicals of particular concern include: heavy metals, nuclear waste, chlorofluorocarbons, persistent organic pollutants and all harmful chemicals capable of bioaccumulation Economic dimension The challenge for sustainability is to curb and manage Western consumption while raising the standard of living of the developing world without increasing its resource use and environmental impact. This must be done by using strategies and technology that break the link between, on the one hand, economic growth and on the other, environmental damage and resource depletion. Decoupling environmental degradation and economic growth Historically there has been a close correlation between economic growth and environmental degradation: as communities grow, so the environment declines. Ecological economics includes the study of societal metabolism, the throughput of resources that enter and exit the economic system in relation to environmental quality.[115][116] Nature as an economic externality As ecosystem services are generally treated as economic externalities they are unpriced and therefore overused and degraded, a situation sometimes referred to as the Tragedy of the Commons.[117] The global recession and a range of associated government policies are likely to bring the biggest annual fall in the world's carbon dioxide emissions in 40 years.[122] Economic opportunity Treating the environment as an externality may generate short-term profit at the expense of sustainability.[123] Sustainable business practices, on the other hand, integrate ecological concerns with social and economic ones (i.e., the triple bottom line).[124] Social dimension "The relationship between human rights and human development, corporate power and environmental justice, global poverty and citizen action, suggest that responsible global citizenship is an inescapable element of what may at first glance seem to be simply matters of personal consumer and moral choice."[132] Peace, security, social justice Depletion of natural resources including fresh water[133] increases the likelihood of “resource wars”.[134] This aspect of sustainability has been referred to as environmental security and creates a clear need for global environmental agreements to manage resources such as aquifers and rivers which span political boundaries, and to protect global systems including oceans and the atmosphere.[135] Human relationship to nature Nature is thus treated as a commodity: “The plundering of the human spirit by the market place is paralleled by the plundering of the earth by capital.”[136 Still more basically, Bookchin argued that most of the activities that consume energy and destroy the environment are senseless because they contribute little to quality of life and well being. The function of work is to legitimize, even create, hierarchy. For this reason understanding the transformation of organic into hierarchical societies is crucial to finding a way forward.[137]Social ecology, founded by Bookchin, is based on the conviction that nearly all of humanity's present ecological problems originate in, indeed are mere symptoms of, dysfunctional social arrangements. Deep ecology establishes principles for the well-being of all life on Earth and the richness and diversity of life forms. This is only compatible with a substantial decrease of the human population and the end of human interference with the nonhuman world. To achieve this, deep ecologists advocate policies for basic economic, technological, and ideological structures that will improve the quality of life rather than the standard of living. Human settlements One approach to sustainable living, exemplified by small-scale urban transition towns and rural ecovillages, seeks to create self-reliant communities based on principles of simple living, The Worldwide Fund for Nature proposes a strategy for sustainability that goes beyond education to tackle underlying individualistic and materialistic societal values head-on and strengthen people's connections with the natural world.[148] Sustainability principles 1.Reduce dependence upon fossil fuels, underground metals, and minerals 2. Reduce dependence upon synthetic chemicals and other unnatural substances 3. Reduce encroachment upon nature 4. Meet human needs fairly & efficiently[140] It appears western society fails on all four sustainability principles. I predict that the western psyche will never value quality of life over standard of living. My premise is that our western psyche perceives no difference between quality of life and standard of living.
