I used to live in the Baltics and have many friends from Georgia; some of whom are in the military right now.

Really. I dont hear about daily attacks on American soil. Which news is reporting it? If you are referring to Americans being attacked in Iraq.....do you blame that county? If Iraq occupied America....would you want them out? Did they attack us on our soil? Before we occupied Iraq. If it were Iraquis, then no; but it isn't.
  4. It was a reference to the "jumpers in the door". Old Airborne paratrooper saying.

We must eliminate these people's abilities to vote in order to save them from themselves. We will start a new political structure that is based on collective work for collective gain. I just can't think of a catchy name for it. Anyone have a good idea?

I have no idea what the overall missions are for any given war. That is waaaaay above my paygrade. What I do know though is that there are fundamental differences in the ways that Russia went about their incursion and the way we went about ours. We notified the international community and listened (though we didn't heed their advice). We also had reconstruction on our minds; to make the country a better place (hopefully) than when we got there. Also, just because some people in our government to something wrong, doesn't absolve Putin for his wrongdoings; escpecially the violence and complete disregard for any wartime conventions.

Did someone fly planes into the twin towers and the pentagon previous to 8 years ago? The world has changed. That our way of life is relatively unchanged is quite remarkable as I see it. Tell me....what does planes flying into buildings have to do with our occupation of Iraq? Last time I checked the 19 highjackers were all from Saudi Arabia. WTF? What does Iraq have to do with what I was talking about kiddo?

They are controlling them. This is just another example of Russian politics. Say one thing and do another. Georgia is not the 'good-guy' but Russia is most certainly the bad guy. There are no innocent parties in this debacle, but there are some fairly extreme wrong doings going on right now on behalf of the Russians. Georgia is playing a propaganda game, blowing the Russian actions out of proportion, hurting their credibility and possibility of having the West come to aid; militarily or otherwise.

I have not commented on Russia at all, and if you read my post you will see that I don't "stand behind" Clinton's decisions re: Kosovo. My only point was that you righties keep bringing up Kosovo as the worst ever application of the American military, yet if you look at what happened there, the results (questionable as they are), and the reaction of the rest of the world, it stacks up OK (not great) against virtually every US engagement for the last 30 years. And yes: you are right that it is not over yet. But in what way have I compared Iraq to Vietnam, and what was wrong with the comparison? How about the culture of the indigenous people Matt? Mending intra and inter-sect conflict is perhaps 90% of winning peace in Iraq. Now show me some correlations with Vietnam. The Mountaignards? Please.

I don't doubt that trigger happy jar heads can't wait to get some action in with a real enemy. Go git them commie bastards, boy! Since you dispatched those towel heads in Iraqistan with such ease, god-less pinkos should be a pushover. Quick , get Rummy back in the Pentagon to formulate the war plan. Semper fi. You seem like a violent person. I suggest a peace keeping mission and all you can think about is killing commies. Perhaps you should go back to playing counter strike and have your mummy bring you another hotpocket and mountain dew.

That is yet to be seen Matt. Kosovo was a victory, but for whom? The politics were dubious; still are. My question is this. How can you stand behind Clinton while berating Russia when these are litterally idenical circumstances?
  21. Its against the rules of the games and it isn't exactly great to be vaulting through the air when your epiphyseal plates haven't fused. The older athletes have enough major injuries. For a younger athlete, this could cripple them for a lifetime.

I agree, but Georgia gave them an excuse and they (Putin) ran with it. You want to talk realpolitik zim zam? Definition. It is clear that you cannot give Putin and inch politically. He will take a kilometer for every one you give him. I would like to see some military presence in Georgia from the west. Nothing offensive, but a large peacekeeping force of marines and rangers that are ordered to put-down any hostilities witnessed. This would be the ideal solution (at least temporarily). Since Russia doesn't want to honor their obligations under a cease fire, we can help them do that.

What exactly went out behind the scenes to make Russia pull out so quickly? I think the US threatened to immediately admit Ukraine into NATO. They haven't pulled out. They just said they did. There are still tanks in Georgia and planes doing bombing runs as of this morning.

Hind-sight is 20/20. Russia made a huge gamble doing what they did. They were opportunistic and gambled and won. Save Russia interveening, there is no reason why Georgia couldn't have retaken Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Now, given the fact that the West is tied up in other conflicts, the timing seemed rather shitty for Georgia. They have had this dispute for what? 17 years? Why, now, would they do such a thing? Perhaps Russia should finance the reconstruction. Seems like if they really wanted to just save the ethnic Russians, they would love to rebuild and give the areas' leadership somehting to work with.

Uh, hello, Clinton cut military funding big-time, during his time in office. While he had troops comitted to foreign conflicts.
