I think it's possible the drive just needs to be reseated. When you get home, turn the beast on and listen closely for noise from the drive. You should hear it spinning. If it's damaged, it might sound a bit like shaking a box of nails. If you hear nothing, my bet is it just needs to be reconnected. If it IS damaged, you're probably looking at a few hundred dollars to get your data, give or take.

Hmm, are you sure the hard-drive is broken? Possibly is it just disconnected by the fall? How do you know it doesn't recognize the drive? What does it say when it boots? Can you hear the harddrive spinning when you power on? If your drive IS dead, you can still get the data from it (most likely) but the question at that point is, how much are you willing to pay?

I'm with you, Mark. I don't care if someone TRs a route or whatever, or even laps it, but if someone is waiting, then take your fucking turn and get off. It's not a "rule" it's just good manners. You're welcome to have bad manners, but it's going to piss people off. If I'm out with friends and we see someone else waiting for a go, we'll get it done, and get off. Now, if there's 4 of us, what does it matter if 1 leads and 3 TR it? How is that different than 1 leading, 1 cleaning, then another leading, and another cleaning? Either way the next party is waiting for 4 people to climb it, and if 3 TR it, then probably they'll be waiting LESS than if everybody broke into groups of 2 and re-lead. I would never "lap" a route that somebody was waiting on. That's just rude -- it's like hogging the water fountain: take a few drinks -- if you're still thirsty, go to the back of the line and wait your turn.

This is really driving me nuts. Why is everyone so proud of Sarah Palin because HER DAUGHTER chose to keep the baby? Is that a tacit admission that her daughter didn't really make the choice? Shouldn't you be praising the daughter? Not The mother? I don't see why this has anything to do with the mother, per se, unless you are saying that the mother made the choice for the daughter, which would be pretty fucked up, I think.

My son starts 3rd grade on Tuesday. We went to the student/teacher orientation yesterday and he met his teacher -- named Mrs. Gross! Why would someone teach elementary school students with a name like that? Blakely met her, and she told him her name, and I could see the corners of his mouth twitching. He said, "well....that's an interesting name." Athena starts kindergarten. At the orientation, all the parents were asking yuppy questions, like "Does the school serve organic food?" And "is there any way to not serve snacks with corn syrup or artifical colorings/flavorings?" Someone else was complaining that the school didn't have any "african art" programs. The bus driver reminded us not to follow the school bus to school on the first day, because she's obligated to call the police department if she sees any cars following her bus. What a world we live in. 12 more years!
