I guess I should have just called the ranger station in the first place. Anyway, the road is gated at 29 pines, with lots of snow, for anyone who wants to know.

Believe it or not, I posted this here because the Cle Elum ranger station web site has been down. Anyway, I don't usually Google for current conditions, because I always end up getting something that is outdated, like the link you posted, but point taken. I plan on giving the ranger station a ring, I'll post back with what I find.

Its interesting, in the book he talks about cutting around the tissue and muscle, and that didn't hurt much because it was dead, but when he had to cut the nerves, that part was excruciating. He passed out every time he tried to sever them, I think it took him a few tries.
