Dude, this same thing happened to me at Vantage once. I looked down below me and still can't figure out exactly how it got that way, but it was upside down and pressed into the bolt with the gate being held open. Not completely unclipped yet, but still...

Chickenheads and Knobs on Snow Creek Wall
ClimbingPanther replied to catbirdseat's topic in Climber's Board
So it seems that they are saying erosion isn't necessarily a function of ice movement, but rather it is dependent on the amount of till beneath the glacier. Since sub-glacial streams remove debris [and erodes a little too ], the glacier erodes the rock freely. When no effective method of debris removal exists, it builds up, slowing the erosion down dramatically by creating a buffer between the glacier and the ground below. I do agree now that glaciers with running water beneath them erode far more than glaciers without running water, but I still don't think the running water itself is actually doing the lion's share of erosion. Feel free to correct me if I missed something important (not that you need my permission ). -
I was wondering if I am the only one who things this site has been slow recently? Maybe it's the overload of nonsense?

My only question anymore is, Dru, where did you learn about glacial eroding? I've posted sites from believeable sources that support the theory that abrasion is done by the glacier scraping rocks across rocks, and silty water flowing is more of a side note than a primary erosion method. Could you please enlighten us as to where you got this theory from so we can be enlightened as well? If it's true, I want to read about it. -
It's OK, minx. We still love you. Now, start the countdown for kevbone agreeing and trying to make us believe he is above all that... 5... 4... 3... Unfortunately, that won't help us love him.

I've been very happy with my BD ATC for rapelling. No rope twist at all (I let the rope go down between my legs for as straight a line as possible). It glides pretty easily. It's not the ideal for belaying above though, because the rope slips through easily. Good for belaying the leader (some extra give in the system to minimize shock-loading), and it's not wrong for belaying the follower, just not the ideal. I still use it for both though. The theory is to minimize/eliminate the amount of rope that goes through the device if the follower falls to preserve his/her progress, however follower falls don't typically generate much force anyway.

Dru, it is clear that you are not a complete idiot like kevbone because you form very coherent writings. However, I think you must be joking on this one...? Anybody who takes the ever-present cc.com advice (search the interweb) will find that glaciologists recognize two key forms of erosion, neither of which are silty sub-glacial streams. It's always abrasion (rock in glacier against rock under glacier) and quarrying (freeze-thaw popping loose chunks of sub-glacial rock which are then picked up). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier#Glacial_erosion http://gemini.oscs.montana.edu/~geol445/hyperglac/eroproc1/ http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF4/416.html -

That theory has been discredited since the 1950s. Wake the fuck up and read the science before you spout off numbnuts It's the sediment-filled subglacial water that does all the erosion!!!! That IS what he was saying, that the streams do "all" (most) of the erosion. I certainly can't prove anything, but I don't believe it until someone proves my theory wrong -

which is why glaciers tend to sink into narrow, stream-chiseled gorges... wait a second you see that stream-chiseled stuff way out away from glaciers, such as Box Canyon in MRNP, but not under the glacier itself, eh? not that I'm an expert, I'm just Satan's advocate. Personally I believe the rock is on the left and the glacier is on the right: -

Maybe the problem be a misinformed landlubber making the title of this thread to have the wrong month. -

Aaarrrg, if today be the day, then why be the Pirates Only Forum so far down the list of Active topics? I'll keel-haul you all with my 8mm rope! -
I met a couple of Norwegians coming down Aasgard a few weeks ago and they said many old Norse names have been changed. Is this true / are the Starks' names the new or old ones? Anyway, to him for his love of the outdoors, and peace be with his family

minx, I have had a gateway for 6 years, and apart from the fact that Windows XP takes up half the hard drive and it weighs a ton, it hasn't give me any real trouble. I still use it.

I know you don't hate, oly, but my ego can't suffer you to scorn my ideas without a solid rebuttal, no matter how weak my position. It's kinda like when people criticize me for my decision to trash Iraq with only the shakiest threads of evidence.... OH CRAP!!! I just blew my cover! My SS thugs (that's Secret Service in case you were wondering) will be coming by your house with a little gift package of LEAD if you are reading this. I was a little hasty. Yes, I admit it doesn't make sense car-to-car if you're going in and out the same way. Essentially we did bring a pack in most of the way, but left them at camp a mile and a half back, rather than the base of the climb. You're right, I'm wrong. Wait, that was out of character! Get lost, foo! -
Dude, kevbone just said something coherent AND likely true! Way to go man, keep it up! I'm a little apprehensious (sp?), but as someone who's lost confidence in our current president, I guess she couldn't be THAT much worse, right?

Laugh, jerks, laugh. Seriously though, we did the west ridge [edit: packless] last year from the mouth of Viviane, which is about 3 miles round trip. I would not blink an eye before doing it again [packless]. It was pure pleasure the whole way. Maybe 3 to ~20 is a bit of a jump, but I'd be curious to hear if anyone's done long distances [packless]. Packless rules. Go eat sausage, haters -
Dude, I have one of those books. Just thought everyone would want to know.

It may be more difficult to pull this off car-to-car, but I imagine it could work... I find it better when I have a harness with me to actually wear the harness while hiking, then hang stuff off of it (water bottle, small food sack, rock shoes, etc.) than to have an actual pack of any size. The rack & the rope backpack (if you're not familiar with this masterpiece of someone else's genius, let me know) may not be so comfortable for 20 miles, but who knows until you've tried it?! Man, I love the enchantments. Nice TR! -

Spray is always free! I think they should have a separate grading system for every factor imagineable. Last week, I sent a VIx19a-3.4uiFF06+++ with a 0fa1189.4'- approach

Hey Mike, Did you know that Pilsner Urquell is actually a macro import from the Czech Republic? Cheers!
