why fuck up a pair of good boots. i'll lone you my scalpel and you can shorten you toes to fit the boot. i know it's kind of crazy but you know me, always trying to think out of the box. also you might try the mountain shop. They got some tools to do a professional job at stretching out the plastic in boots. What about adjusting your liners?

Trip: mt. hood - white river canyon Date: 1/19/2007 Trip Report: Took a solo trip up the white river glacier. In the morning the snow down low was suprisingly light without an noticable crust. Things quickly changed as a warm wind picked and I headed up the canyon. Creek crossing is doable but hard to find. Variable soft snow till 7000 and then withier boiler plate ice or wind buff. I had to kick steps up boiler plate ice with ski boots fot the last 300 ft. By the time I made it back down to the lower section of the canyon the soft snow had turned to curst and the skiing was somewhat callenging. So basically if your planning to head out don't expect great snow on mt. hood till the next dump. Car to car 5 hours, 4400 vertical feet Gear Notes: at boots were a plus next time I'm bringing crampons Approach Notes: creek crossing in but hard to find

Jamin sounds like an idiot. Lots of people have died climbing Rainier because of the general attitude the Jamin is spouting. In good weather, with good conditions and with good luck it can be quite a easy trip but...things can change quickly in the mountains. Even very experienced climbers have died on Rainier, Willi Unsoeld comes to mind. If you don't have much experience at climbing glacieated peaks a guide can teach you tons of stuff and they know how to react if unexpected events occur. That said they are not a silver bullet. Risks remain and you will need to get up there under your own power. That said I wouldn't hire a guide but that's because I live here and I climb here and I can learn things from the mountains and the people that climb them and thus prepare myself for a climb and then make my own judgements. Such oppurtunities do not exist if you live in pennsylvania. So learn from some pros and have fun while your doing it. Maybe next time you can climb it on your own. -
how are you going to get in there???

I met a bunch of them up at tieton river. It was a trad climbing class. They acted like they owned the crag and basically set up there TR's and said we were here first so if you had any notion of climbing these routes that's just to bad. Rubbed me the wrong way. I took an avi class from North Cascades Mountain Guides. Very good and would definately recommend it. The cool thing is you get to hang out in mazama as well.

the snotel site guide is not recording accurate info. I was there 1 month ago and found excellent conditions at wing ridge. I made a trip report on this site. At the time there was at least 3-4 ft in most areas and 12 inchs fresh. I assume they have gotten more snow since then. The only hassle was on the approach dodging windfall in the burn areas. Upper slopes where in great shape.

Up for a quick dash up Beacon tomorrow (Sunday)
fheimerd replied to JosephH's topic in Rock Climbing Forum
jospeh, you still headed out there today? -
heard on the radio that s and r is going to give it another go.
-
I was gonna take the day off to go skiing in the backcountry tomorrow is there anyway to help out?
-
thinking of all involved up there. the weather sucks for this to happen, keep safe
-
yeah the snotel site seems fucked up. I think it is measuring precip. not actual snow accumalation. Coverage was spotty on ridges and over windfall but otherwise 3-4 ft.
