Do they have homeowner's/renter's insurance? If this occurred while they were on a SAR mission, they may be able to make a claim through their SAR unit. Suxor.

A lot of seemingly rude things have been posted on this website over the last week (by myself included) about the accident on Mt. Hood. However, I believe that the rude postings by the cc.com regulars were intended to mock and drive away the gawking, non-climbing jackals who seemed to relish every gory detail of the accident and who speculated about it endlessly without giving any thought to the fear, anguish, and pain felt by the climbers and their friends and family. I'm sorry that we had to resort to such terrible tactics to have our voices heard over the know-nothing ambulance chasers that inundated this site recently. We probably could have dealt with that better. CC.com is a group that cares deeply about the well-being and fate of all climbers, and I'm sure that most of us here wish we could have been a part of the search on Mt. Hood. And I know that we were all hoping those climbers would be found safe and sound with a great story to tell. I'm very sorry we'll never get to hear that story. My very best wishes for the friends and family of the climbers. May you heal soon and well.

Excuse me, maybe you expert campers on this website forum can answer my question. At what temperature does snow burn? Does REI carry matches that are good enough so I can make a campfire in the ice cave to avoid the hypothermicals?

Hey, I'm no expert eater, still working my way up to the hardcore stuff, but I think all those fat people should be required to cary those AEDs (automagic defribriligator devices) I think is waht they are called. That would have saved this guy. so irresposssissbsle. Only $895 device to save family suffering.. so sad when irresponsible people don't think of others.

Could someone please go up there to Mountain Hood and yodel? I think that will shake all the snow off and make it easier to find the lost hikers.

Do you think if they had had glow in the dark ice pickles to make the Y they would have been rescued earlier? All hikers should be required to carry glow in the dark ice pickles. It's irresponsible for their families if they don't and then they endanger those dolphons.

I'm new to climbing, I've only climbed up Mt.Muffin, and I don't mean to disrespect the climbers, but here is what I think happened: Has anyone considered the possibility that the three climbers were attacked by a crazed vietnam vet off his meds who cut the rope, dislocated one of the climber's shoulders, then relocated it, then stole their ice picks and dug a 1/2 mile deep crevice in the glacier to hide his tauntaun? Perhaps the sheriff was hypocisxixsc (Hood River is HIGH!) and was confused about something. I saw that on Fox news. I still can't figure out why they used those ice picks to make the "Y" in the snow though. Please let me know if I should contact SAR about this. I THINK WE CAN FIGURE THIS THING OUT!!! God bless those rescue dolphins.

WOAH!!! Maybe the cell phone call was actually made using smoke signals and the family was so upset by the smoke signals that they had some kind of hypothermic anemiaoliemic shock and thought they were talking on a cell phone! WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I just thought of something. If those guys had had some matches, they could have started a campfire and then the plaines would have been able to see them. Like smoke signals right? My heart just goes out to those poor ice picks.

I've been so captivated with thsi story. I saw a dead dog on the side of teh road once and i just stopped my buick and poked it over and over and over and over and over... Hey, have you guys heard anything about a cut rope? Maybe the snow crystals focused the sun onto the rope like a magnifying glass and burned through it that way. Could someone call SAR and tell them about my idea and report back here with therei reply? I'm a hero.

Now I heard that there was an ice pick in the SAR glacier with the rope cutting tool, obviously that doesn't add up. I think the sheriff is hiding something. I climbed Mt. Baldy once.
