Any updates on conditions? How about Children of the Sun?

Yes the two pictures are of different anchors. Yes the sheriff's story is goofy. That's because he isn't a climber and is getting second and third hand reports from lots of different people and is getting confused. Yes Iain is a respected and knowledgable climber very familiar with Mt. Hood. Your postings about your attempts to understand obvious facts and climbing concepts are a waste of everyone's time and are not productive in any way for anyone except yourself and no one cares if you ever understand this accident anyway. So stop it. Wait for the official report. You will get your explanation. p.s. I'm glad that you have now summarized what you think the lessons to be gleaned from this event are; now you can stop posting.

OK you smartypants climbers, explain to me how/why more than one climber would step in THE EXACT SAME FOOTPRINTS while ascending a snowy slope. To me its obvious that they were abducted by aliens and the sheriff is lying to us about it. It's a coverup man! Government conspiracy! Thank you wildcat for noticing this. You are a hero!

That isn't a hand, it's part of an airplane. Now will you please shut up and stop posting on this website?

None of you know what happened. You don't have access to all of the facts and evidence. Within a couple weeks or so, a detailed report will be prepared by the sheriff and SAR folks intimately involved in this event that gives the most likely scenario of what went wrong based on all of the compiled evidence. All of you yahoos from all across the country offering up your half-baked "what-if" scenarios is disgusting. Please stop. Just be quiet and go back to whatever it is you do. Vultures. p.s. Your hallmark card philosophy bullshit about climbing isn't helping either.

The best way to serve your country is to not be a knee-jerk dumbass. Too late for you. You think you're Above the Law- well...you're not. I think you are outnumbered ponytail boy. Better get Chuckie to back you up.

I heard it directly from the mouth of the Hood River Police Detective during the news conference yesterday. And he said it with such confidence too! Yeah, I was told about that "Y" symbol when I got my climbing license. Weren't you?
-
Whatya say? Who's with me? Wanna go conquer some evils?

Hey Frog, Should all hunters, hikers, and alzheimer's patients be required to carry licenses and rescue insurance? Because the vast majority of SAR operations are for them, not climbers. Another problem. If someone PAYS for a service, they have a right to EXPECT DELIVERY OF THAT SERVICE. That means, someone who paid for rescue insurance, or their relatives, or lawyers or whatever could demand that rescuers go into dangerous situations to try to rescue that person. This is in stark contrast to the current situation where the safety of the rescuers is the primary consideration. And furthermore.... your idea is POOPY!

A more-readable version of the link that BigTree posted The USGS map symbol for cave is a "Y" rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Link to emergency ground-to-air symbology This stuff is all irrelevant of course, since the "Y" in this case was an anchored rope, but interesting nonetheless. Anybody been able to find the pic of the anchor in the Hood thread or on the Oregonian website?
-
Yes I have. It's very obviously a slung boulder/horn. You could see the rope running around the back of it.
-
This is our opportunity to educate them that Baby Jesus doesn't give a shit about their little lives.
-
I don't think its equalized. I think it's a slung boulder. The whole "Y" = "Yes, we are here" is ridiculous. Some anonymous person in the Hood Fiasco thread said that "Y" is a USGS map symbol for a cave. I looked into that, but was unable to confirm that. If true, that would be an interesting factoid and a neat coincidence, but the "Y" in this case was clearly an anchor meant to secure them in the cave or on the slope, and was not meant to designate a particular letter.

Well, there are a few other glaringly moronic misinterpretations and misstatements spread by Fox News and the like that you could straigten out for us. Keep up the good work.
