Aside from the fact that presidential vetoes are very hard to override, the (defense) spending at that time was fully supported by Reagan. As for Carter, he's remembered for the oil embargo, economic stagnation, and a botched hostage rescue. The dismal economic situation was an inevitable byproduct of the out of control spending for the Vietnam war: any president would have suffered the same fate there. The oil embargo resulted in Carter pushing energy independence: had Reagan not dismantled his programs, we'd probably be much better off than we are now as a country (and a planet). And as for the hostage rescue; that was one small, failed mission, albeit embarrassing, not the two lost wars we currently face. What has been forgotten is that Carter was also the originator of a middle eastern rapid deployment force, which later allowed us to gain a quick Desert Storm victory. Look, the bottom line is this, the liberal media is doing everything in their power to get the conservatives out; if they can paint a poor picture on the economy then, AND get the moderates to buy into it then the liberals will win the election. Our economy is based on a trust and belief that the whole darn thing is not going to unravel. That is it, and nothing more. And YES it is that simple.

OK, so it was 4:00 AM when I arrived at the TH. I was getting things packed up so I can be well on the trail before the sun gets up. I start on the trail head in the dark, and wondering just what the heck am I doing, at the TH at 4? I have loaded up my pack with everything and 2.5 gallons of water as well. I am huffing and puffing my way up Mt. Si. Yuck! Then a cool breeze hits the back of my covered up neck, and then out of nowhere this guy very old look man, he looks to be at least 90 years old, passes me by like I am standing still. I would like to think it is because I am caring 75 pounds but no, his pack is bigger than mine. He looks at me, cackles something about getting old and continues up. So I get to the park bench and wished I have brought more water and less gear so I could dump it, and guess what I see. NO ONE! The old man is gone. He did not pass me on his way back down. I am a little worried for him so I ask some people who get up there just after me and they said they saw no one going up or down, and my care was the only other care in the parking lot…… They go up on top of Hay Stack and back down. NO ONE. The dude is gone. Just like that. True story!

Go get this book. I have an earlier addition that I am still using with my 12, and 9 year olds. Every new hike we go on I write the date, who went such like mom, dad, son, daughter, neighbor, and some new catchy phrase we used for the day such like ouch do my puppies hurt! My point is we have been using this book for about 9 years now, and it is really good and full of great idea. I don’t think a hike mentioned on this thread is not in this book.
