people tend to say that the zipper on the Oly Mons tends to jam up and get stuck pretty well/break. What are you planning on using them for? Ovens on your feet!

someone did compare me to you in another thread, NOLSe. I'll behave from now on:)

Do many people approach Olympus from the South? Say from Big Flat or Pelton Creek?
-
Yeah John, thanks for the kind words. I'll remember them. I don't really intend on making a lifelong career out of guiding, but want to do it during college and perhaps for a few years after if time allows...we'll see where it takes me. And Yes, Todd is a great guy. I've met him a few times in Talkeetna and get only positive vibes from him. I am getting my EMT in the spring, currently becoming WFR certified.

We were going to use the road this summer to climb Sloan or Glacier peak, but when we learned it was washed out, we used the North Sauk road instead and attempted Glacier Peak, but were turned around by whiteout conditions and loads of rain.

Look FW, either way I wasn't looking to start a fight with you or anyone else. I think that if you look back on my post responding to jvooz, then look at the way you responded to me, you might see how it came across. I wasn't an asshole off the bat, I didn't make any negative remarks. Why respond to me like that. I had planned on climbing Olympus this summer, checked a few (seemingly) reliable resources, and from ALL of them, found it to be less than perfect. Perhaps your proved them wrong. I wish now I would have ventured there regardless, but I decided to put my time into other adventures. I think that some of your comments are unwarranted, but whatever. You slammed me, hats off to you. I think you'd be hardpressed to find one word here or anywhere else on this board where I have been disrespectful to you.

Guess that means I won't be considered for a coveted mod position, eh? Maybe people will take me more seriously when I have a few thousand posts.

It's easy to play the bully, but my sources were the Olympic National Park, other friends of mine, and most notably this website. Here is a link to a thread with multiple people (including some who have climbed it) saying it was less than stellar. http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/threadz/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/460522/an/0/page/0#460522 Suz says: John says: cj001f says: Way to rule with an iron fist, Fairweather... I'll just sit around (not climbing, obviously) here and hopefully not say something stupid so you won't have to correct me.
-
well fairweather, my dear friend, you are probably the ONLY one i've heard say that it was a good year on Olympus. Everyone else has been complaining about blue ice and receeding snow/ice from the block. Glad to hear it was such a stellar year though.
-
either way, you're gaining new experiences and knowledge every day which will, in the end, allow you to attain new experiences and take advantage of new opportunities which would have otherwise been nearly impossible.
-
still, everyone has to work and make money. why not have a job that pays you to climb? Sure it's hard work dealing with people sometimes, but you're still getting to do what you love and experiencing things that most only dream of or wonder about.

hopefully this next summer will be better for Olympus. seems like it was a shitty year for it.

Car entrance fees to triple at Mount Rainier
Kraken replied to JERRY_SANCHEZ's topic in Mount Rainier NP
People will gladly pay 10$ to go see a movie at a theatre in downtown seattle, but scoff when they have to pay $10-15 for a nature experience in a pristine environment? -

yeah it's amazing how much it costs to maintain a road. I was just talking to a guy named Jeff who actually designs and builds trails in RMNP and he said it costs around $10K per mile of normal trail, up to $40K per mile for bridged or planked trail... imagine how much it must cost to maintain a road. yikes. -
Yeah, Rat, I saw a sign for this at work yesturday on the message board on the wall. You'll love Olympus, hopefully the snowfall in the olympics will be bigger this year and the moat surrounding the summit block won't be so gargantuant. Good luck on your donations!

Car entrance fees to triple at Mount Rainier
Kraken replied to JERRY_SANCHEZ's topic in Mount Rainier NP
personal opinions and stances, I suppose. Just for curiousity's sake, what is the entrance fee for Baker, Hood, Adams, and Helens? It's been so long since I have been to any of them that I can't remember. That and the fact that mommy and daddy paid while I sat in the back playing gameboy or something. -

At the same time though guys, the park really is quite low on funds. They aren't making a hefty profit here. When you consider what it costs to get into other national parks, it really isn't that bad. Plus, the 10/15$ you pay to get in is good for an entire week. That includes parking, utilities, etc. Not bad in my opinion. To park at a trailhead anywhere else, for example, The Chugach...you're bound to pay $5/day...each day. I think I've paid the entrance fee 3 or 4 out of the 5 times I've been to the park and each time I've felt it was well worth the admission. Hell, I think they only charge during the busy season anyways, so if you want to climb in the winter or early spring, you don't pay anything. I don't think you could find many other mountains of such calibur that cost so little to climb. -

still a pretty cheap price to pay to climb the mighty peak. I'm not going to complain. -
Hey all, I'm in need of some high quality pictures of Mount Hunter, particularly those showing the Southeast face as well as the North face with the West Ridge. I'm working on a project and need some clearer pictures. If anyone has any, could they please post them or PM them to me. I'd really appriciate it. All I have to work with now are some ones from magazines which are small and not detailed enough. Thanks.
